Recap: Indian Summers Episode 6 (1×6)

Sunday’s episode of Indian Summers was certainly, as my mother used to say, a doozy. So much happened in this episode. Jaya, who had gotten a job in last week’s episode working on Ramu Sood’s plantation, sneaks into the house and holds up a beautiful sari that she has taken from the closet. She flashes back to a happier time before sneaking off with the sari. When Ramu Sood discovers that the sari is missing, he is furious. He fires Ian when he discovers that Ian was the one who gave Jaya a job on the plantation. Ian is later denied entrance to the club because Cynthia is a racist and hates the fact that he continues to work for Ramu Sood despite her best efforts.

Ralph Whelan doesn’t have much time to bask in the glow of his engagement to Madeleine because of Jaya’s reappearance. When Cynthia finds out about the Jaya situation, particularly that there is a child, she encourages Ralph to do nothing. Instead, she’ll talk to Kaiser who knows someone who will take care of it. She also doesn’t share the information that Madeleine and Eugene are broke. Ralph decides to ignore Cynthia’s advice and goes to meet Jaya. It turns out that Chandru Mohan, the man who attempted to shoot him, was Jaya’s father, wanting revenge because Ralph abandoned his daughter and her child. Ralph wants to do the right thing, which in this case, means providing for Jaya and Adam someplace far, far away. Jaya tells him that she has been forced to do terrible things after he abandoned her. Ralph has a moment of real remorse and they share a tender moment. It is also clear that Jaya has become slightly unhinged after everything she’s been through. Overcome after his meeting with Jaya, Ralph heads home and immediately grabs Madeline for a little afternoon delight. He also has to deal with the fact that Dougie knows that Jaya is Adam’s mother. Out of the blue, Ralph offers to help Dougie with repairs to the schoolhouse. Dougie is so grateful that he doesn’t realize that he’s being bribed.

While exploring erotic carvings at a ruined temple, Captain Billy Farquhar saves Alice, Madeline and Ronnie Keane from a deadly cobra by blowing it to bits. The dashing officer is hanging out in Simla while he awaits permission for a climbing expedition. Alice is flattered by his attention but is still drawn to Aafrin, especially after the passionate kisses they shared at the engagement party. Unfortunately for her, Aafrin is cold to her when she comes to see him at the office. So cold, that Alice hands him a note that says simply ‘Look at me.’ When he finally does, the moment is broken.

Mr. Dalal has invited Sita for dinner so that the family can get to know her better. This dinner rivals some of the worst dinner parties on Downton Abbey especially after Mrs. Dalal tells Sita it is okay if she eats with her hands. The dinner goes from awkward to awful when Sooni mocks Aafrin and her father for their politics. Mrs. Dalal is totally pissed off, “The British gave you the education to sit here scorning your father’. Later Mr. Dalal manages to calm her down. But Aafrin is at the breaking point. He tells Sooni “I feel as if I am dead, Sooni, or gathering dust in one of their damn files, marked green for non-immediate dispatch. And one day I will wake up and say, what about me? When is it my turn to choose? And they will say, ‘No, it’s too late for you. Do your duty.” It seems that Aafrin is no longer keen on marrying Sita as he once was.

Impressed by Aafrin’s portrait of Madeline, Captain Farquhar arranges for the ‘sable Leonardo’ as he calls him, to paint a miniature of Alice. Alice is alternately frightened and excited at the chance to spend time with Aafrin. Her hopes are dashed with Aafrin shows up at the house with his youngest sister as a chaperone. Aafrin coolly explains to Alice that while he has heard of British men who take Indian women as mistresses, he’s never heard of an English woman doing the same. Alice and Aafrin share their secrets. Alice confesses everything, about her unhappy marriage and how she deserted her husband to come to India. Aafrin replies that he is under tremendous pressure, supporting his family. Alice rushes upstairs to get her son to introduce him to Aafrin but he is gone before she returns.

Ralph has noticed Captain Farquhar’s attentions towards Alice and decided to expedite his exit out of town. Captain Farquhar turns out not be such a Good Samaritan after all. He reveals to Alice that he is a good friend of her estranged husband. If he wants her to keep her secret, she’s just going to have to be extra-friendly. Ralph overhears his indecent proposal and decides to take matters into his own hands, he lures the good Captain to a stairwell, and shoves him down the stairs. Before he leaves, Farquhar tells Alice that he won’t tell her husband more than she wants him to know and hands over the portrait done by Aafrin.

When Leena tries to intercede in a fraught altercation between Jaya and Adam, who is clearly frightened of his mother, she’s rewarded with a rock to the head. Jaya runs off and leaves Adam with Leena. Ramu and Ian make up over drinks, Ramu admits that the reason he was so upset was because the sari that was stolen belonged to his late wife, it was her wedding sari, and was very precious to him. Wearing the stolen wedding sari, Jaya waits for Ralph at the lake, when she’s suddenly assaulted and drowned. Was it Ralph? We know that he can be violent. Ramu? Cynthia’s henchman Kaiser tying up loose ends? Dougie? Or someone else from Jaya’s past?
