Guest Post: “My Top Five OTPs on TV” by Jess Anastasi

When it comes to screen time, I’m not a huge movie person. I don’t mind going to see the occasional blockbuster or book I’ve read turned into film, but movies generally aren’t my thing. TV shows, however, well that’s a different story. I have a serious obsession with a number of TV shows, and like many fans, I tune in week after week to see how my favorite couple are going. In the interest of relevance, I’ve decided that today’s top five will only feature couples in current TV shows… if I included series that have finished or were cancelled, we could be here all week!

This post will contain spoilers, so if you see a series mentioned and you’re not up to date, you might want to skip ahead.

So, without further ado and in no particular order…

Clarke and Bellamy — The 100

I have been a devoted Bellarke shipper from almost episode one. I didn’t read the books until I was waiting for season 2 to start and desperate for a fix, so I had no idea that in the books, Clarke and Bellamy are actually a couple. A quick browse through tumblr will show you that the Clexa (Clarke and Lexa) shippers and Bellarke shippers have had quite a rivalry going. For a while, the Clexa shippers were claiming victory because Clarke and Lexa spent some of season 3 very much together. But with Lexa’s death, the Bellarke warcry got louder, and now many rabid fans are waiting for Clarke and Bellamy to finally get together in season 4.

But all that aside, Clarke and Bellamy are an interesting couple. At first, they didn’t like each other. Bellamy thought Clarke was a stuck-up do-gooder, and mockingly called her Princess (which has now become an endearment, though I think it’s been a while since he called her that) and Clarke thought Bellamy was an egotistical jerk. They were undoubtedly both leadership material for the 100 teens sent to the ground, which was why the animosity came up, because they had different ideas of how things should be done. But as things got harder, the ground became more dangerous and they got to know one another, they soon realized how strong they could be together and forged a deep connection, which is obvious when they share long, lingering looks and brief but meaningful touches… the kind of stuff that shippers live for and then spend weeks and months dissecting.

Dutch and D’Avin — Killjoys

I haven’t seen any of season 2 yet, so no spoilers please! Poor Dutch and D’Avin. This was one of those couples who were destined the moment they met. D’Avin was immediately smitten with the badass Dutch, but she took a little longer to warm to him. When they did get together, the chemistry was awesome. But it didn’t last—little did any of them know, D’Avin had been brainwashed or programmed (or something) by the military, and blacked out, going on a violent rampage that almost saw him kill his brother, and almost forced Dutch to kill D’Avin. After that, whatever they’d had was fractured, and they had to start building the trust back up again. I’m really looking forward to seeing if and how this happens in season 2.

Spencer and Caleb — Pretty Little Liars

I would never have picked this couple. It never crossed my mind that they could have a thing. But with the time lapse of five years between this season and the last, we find that Spencer and Caleb have a lot in common, and surprisingly found their way to one another. And somehow, it just works so well. As much as I had a thing for Spencer and Toby, and thought Caleb and Hannah were cute together, in my opinion, Spencer and Caleb actually make the best couple.

I’m an episode or two behind, but my heart was breaking in episode four, when Caleb admitted to kissing Hannah, and then Spencer didn’t know how she felt about it in terms of their future. Later, after a couple of the girls accidentally ran over one of the latest creeps in the A vortex, Caleb went over to see her. Spencer couldn’t let him in because she and Hannah were still trying to clean up after the accident. Caleb begged Spencer to let him in, and revealed some choices he made in terms of their relationship that he’d never told her before, tears rolling down his cheeks as he told her she is the one he wanted to be with. You could just see Spencer’s heart breaking, she wanted to be with him more than anything in that moment, but couldn’t risk even him finding out that they’d killed someone. Now I am dying for the next episode to see the fallout of this night.

Bonnie and Enzo — The Vampire Diaries

Another couple I wouldn’t have ever picked, Bonnie and Enzo get the Cutest Couple Ever award. Which I find kind of hilarious to say considering Enzo is just shy of being a complete sociopath, and there’s a reason he’s BFFs with Damon, who—before Elena—was equally psychotic, skimming the line into outright evil. The Vampire Diaries also refreshed and reinvented the show by skipping ahead three years from the previous season (which on a side note, makes me wonder if The Originals are going to do something similar) and I have to say it worked really well.

Bonnie has had terrible luck in her love life, and I know there’s a small crowd of Bonnie and Damon shippers, but I’m pretty sure nothing will ever be better than Bonnie and Enzo. They’re probably going to end up being one of my all time favorite couples. Enzo is a slightly different person with Bonnie. Actually, that’s probably not the right way to put it. Enzo is the best version of himself with Bonnie (may have stolen that from Damon who probably said that about himself with Elena). As for Bonnie, after everything she’s been through, she’s a lot tougher now. She knows who and what Enzo is, and accepts it completely. But as Enzo was infected with some kind of ancient evil (along with Damon) in the season finale, the couple are no doubt in for some tough times ahead.

Caitlin and Barry — The Flash

Okay, I know there are going to be a lot of nay-sayers against the Snowbarry ship. We’re a small but dedicated fanbase. And though the writers have never given any indication that Caitlin and Barry feel or could ever feel anything more for each other than friendship, I just think there’s something about them that would click together so well, and they’d make an awesomely cute couple. Plus they’d have the cutest, geekiest kids ever. I think Caitlin gets Barry in a way that Iris never will, which is probably why they’re such good friends. There was that episode late in season 1 where some other guy shape-shifted to look like Barry and kissed Caitlin, who let’s not forget, kissed who she thought was Barry back after a moment’s hesitation. I’m sure that must have seeded a few Snowbarry shippers who’d never considered them for a couple before. For those of us who were already on the bandwagon, it was a small crumb we’ve held onto all through season 2, hoping for more.

I know that Barry and Iris are meant to be cannon, and they found out that in the future, they get married. But in the last episode of season 2, Barry went back to save his mother and completely destroyed the timeline as we know it. I can’t even imagine where this is going to take things, but have to guess things are going to get worse for Barry, not better. My only consolation is that maybe this will give the writers an avenue to perhaps give some substance to the Snowbarry ship.

So, there you have my top OTPs. And there were so many more I could have mentioned. Stiles and Lydia from Teen Wolf. Or Emma and Hook on Once Upon a Time. Meredith and Alex on Gray’s Anatomy. Do you agree or disagree with some of my couples? Who is your OTP and why?
