EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT: The Duke Knows Best by Jane Ashford

Miss Verity Sinclair would never, ever marry Lord Randolph Gresham because:

He’s a clergyman. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just that Verity has been surrounded by churchmen all her life. She wants someone new and different.

His parish is in a small country town. Verity is determined to escape the country and live in more exciting locales.

He’s got some problem with the Archbishop of Canterbury that nobody seems to want to explain. Awkward!

He’s too handsome. Yes, that’s a thing. He would make a very distracting husband. Why even now, when he walks into a ton party, he draws the eye in the most embarrassing way. Verity’s been caught staring more than once.

He manages her mother too well. There’s something suspicious about that, isn’t there?

He’s not an intrepid explorer and world traveler. Verity is determined that her husband will be. (Because the vastly irritating scientific world won’t fund an expedition led by her.)

He forgot to mention his previous engagement to Rosalie Delacourt. Not something one forgets about!

He offers annoying advice on how to behave. It’s not Verity’s fault that she was introduced to Thomas Rochford, the notorious rake. And she can totally deal with him.

Verity’s father has forbidden the match. In fact, he’s ordered her never to speak to Lord Randolph again. Which isn’t really fair.

They sing two, admittedly intoxicating, duets and everybody expects her to marry him. No way will she be so predictable.

They’re wrong for each other, for all the right reasons…

Lord Randolph Gresham has come to London for one reason only-to find a suitable wife. Verity Sinclair may be intelligent, beautiful, and full of spirit, but her father knows a secret about Randolph that makes her entirely unsuitable as his bride. Not right for him at all, never, not a chance.

Verity knows that Lord Randolph lives in a country parish, and she wants nothing more than to escape to town. He may be fascinating, attractive, rich, and the son of a duke, but she’ll never marry him, nor will she talk to him, flirt with him, walk with him, or dine with him. She’ll sing a duet with him, but only this one time, and only because everyone insists.

But one duet invariably leads to another.
