Lynn Kurland has written some of my favorite heroes (who I will probably share in the near future) but the Dragon of Blackmour holds a special place in my heart.
No, he isn’t actually a dragon. He doesn’t actually drink blood or gobble up six maidens daily.
The Dragon is just a man, a great lord from 1249 England, who has been the cause for so many disturbing rumors. It isn’t until his new bride, Gillian of Warwick arrives, terrified out of her mind, that she realizes that nothing about her new husband is accurate.
Is Christopher a cross, angry soul that tosses around shouts and threats to all around him? Yes. Is he tall, fit and intimidating as hell? Uh huh.
Does he have a wonderfully soft underbelly and big heart just waiting for the right woman? You betcha.
Although Christopher is definitely an alpha hero, he protects one secret that makes him unique in romance land.
Christopher is blind.
That’s right. A blind, virile warrior who is bitter and angry about everything he has lost. A scarred man who is flooded with insecurities and self-hatred.
Until he begins to bask in Gillian’s love and we fall in love with this amazing hero who overcomes so much to protect his woman and find his happily ever.
Throughout the book, there are so many squeal worthy moments where Christopher proves he is most definitely in the swoon category of heroes. Here are just a few of those:
1. For all his bluster and wounded pride, Christopher is understanding. True, he’s ashamed of being blind, and when he hurts himself because Gillian moves the furniture, he scares the dickens out of her by yelling and crashing through the door that she locks against him. However, once he hears the pure terror in her voice, he calms down enough to make a vow that he will never lay hands on her. After the encounter, he hears Gillian’s sobs and wracked with guilt, seeks to comfort her by simply stroking her hand as she falls asleep.
2. Once he realizes the pain Gillian suffered at the hands of her father, Christopher goes to great lengths to win her trust and the reader gets to experience all the teasing and gentleness that he keeps hidden from the world. His sweetness under all that gruff will have you smiling all throughout the book.
3. Although patience isn’t one of Christopher’s strong suits, he has nothing but patience when it comes to Gillian. The reader can see it in the way he coaxes her, encouraging her to be saucy and to shout at him when she is angry, building her confidence and strengthening the love growing between them.
4. Christopher is brave. Yes, he struggles with regaining his own confidence and makes stupid mistakes, but in the end, he is a brave man who risks his life to keep Gillian safe and to prove how much he loves her.
Understanding, Gentleness, Patience, and Bravery…combine it with a fiery temper and fetching blue eyes, what more could you want?
If you haven’t already fallen in love with Christopher of Blackmour, I encourage you to grab a copy of This is All I Ask by Lynn Kurland.
