In Forget Tomorrow, Callie and Logan don’t have the opportunity to go on any dates. They’re too busy, you know, escaping from Limbo, running from FuMA, and figuring out a way to survive. Their courtship, thus, does not follow the typical path of most teenagers in Eden City. If they were normal teens, however, they might go on the following dates:
1. Picnic on the cliffs overlooking the river. The FuMA building is a metal and glass structure that rises high in the sky, and it is perched on a cliff that overlooks a turbulent river, with majestic white foam crashing over the boulders. ComA has set aside a patch of lawn for the public to picnic and enjoy the view, complete with safety rails to keep the curious from creeping too close. If the picnickers are feeling really adventurous, they might sneak into an unsanctioned area without the rails. There, with their feet on the edge of a crumbling cliff, and the wild river below, they might experience an adrenaline rush that heightens the thrill of falling in love.
2. An afternoon at a hover park. All over Eden City, there are hover parks with ramps, bowls, vertical walls, and undulating terrain. Hover boards are the post-Boom equivalent of skate boards. Instead of wheels, however, hover boards have magnets which interact with other magnets underneath the terrain to provide for a smooth, fast ride. These locales make great dates for beginner and expert boarders alike. The sensation of flying leaves you breathless with excitement. Who better to experience this adventure with than a date on whom you’re crushing?
3. Grab a bite at one of the many Meal Assembler Cafes. In Eden City, the majority of food is prepared via a Meal Assembler, a machine into which you pop a pre-packaged plastic-wrapped tray of food. However, most homes can only afford the basic model, which produces standard pre-Boom Amerie fare. It costs an entire year’s credits to upgrade to an additional cuisine. Therefore, teens enjoy venturing to one of these cuisine-specific Meal Assembler cafes to taste something different. Many have been known to fall in love over the unique flavors of congee with hundred-year-old egg or beef patties topped with bone marrow. (Of course, even the most sophisticated cuisine has the slight plasticky flavor of food prepared in the Meal Assembler.)
4. Eat at one of the city’s five eating establishments. A select few people will become Manual Chefs, who prepare food in the pre-Boom way — by hand. These artists have opened eating establishments, in which people dine for very special occasions — such as birthdays, anniversaries, and Memory Day celebrations. Food prepared by Manual Chefs occupy an entirely different plane than food prepared in the Meal Assemblers. This food is more vibrant, more intense — and it doesn’t taste like plastic. This date is reserved for couples who are very serious — perhaps on the verge of an engagement. Thus, the eating establishments will rarely see teens who have not yet received their future memories. After all, it would be foolish in the extreme to commit yourself to a person without having seen his or her future.
5. Try on different future lives at one of the virtual reality theaters. Teens in Eden City count down the days until they receive their future memories — and with good reason. In Eden City, your future memory is your biggest recommendation. More than your grades, more than your credit history. Because your memory is more than a predictor. It’s a guarantee. This obsession plays out at these virtual reality theaters, where teens can “try on” a certain career for an hour to see how it feels. They can even enter the theaters with a date to see how their future life together might play out. Not surprisingly, these theaters are frequented by teens who are not yet seventeen. Once they receive their future memories, teens will know exactly what their future holds. Thus, the speculative role-play afforded by these theaters is no longer relevant.
And there you have it! The five dates Callie and Logan might have gone on if they were normal teens. But since they aren’t, they’ll just have to find some other way to fall in love…
Imagine a world where your destiny has already been decided…by your future self.
It’s Callie’s seventeenth birthday and, like everyone else, she’s eagerly awaiting her vision-a memory sent back in time to sculpt each citizen into the person they’re meant to be. A world-class swimmer. A renowned scientist.
Or in Callie’s case, a criminal.
In her vision, she sees herself murdering her gifted younger sister. Before she can process what it means, Callie is arrested and placed in Limbo-a hellish prison for those destined to break the law. With the help of her childhood crush, Logan, a boy she hasn’t spoken to in five years, she escapes.
But on the run from her future, as well as the government, Callie sets in motion a chain of events that she hopes will change her fate. If not, she must figure out how to protect her sister from the biggest threat of all-Callie, herself.
