Exclusive Excerpt: HOOKED ON TROUBLE by Kelly Siskind

Hooked on Trouble by Kelly Siskind

We devoured this excerpt in record speed. Hooked On Trouble by Kelly Siskind has the pacing of a really great soap opera! And here’s your taste:

His large hand presses against my knee under the table. “Can we talk?”

Jesus, his touch. It’s the first time I’ve felt the weight of his palm on me since Aspen. It’s heavy. Huge. Callused. Instinctually I shift forward, my body no longer mine to command. He doesn’t move his hand. Just his thumb. It presses harder, dragging downward. I grip my armrests to keep from sliding to the floor. He stares at me, waiting for my answer.

Yes. No. Maybe. I choose silence.

The way our lives are entrenched with our friends, I’ll have to spend time with him, and I can’t keep pretending I can block him out. Moving here was about starting fresh, which means letting go of this grudge. But talking about Aspen could stir up more feelings, the same way the experience spurred my need to find Rose. If we talk about our time in the hot tub, it could unhinge me further.

Our waiter arrives to take our order, and Nico’s thumb moves again, a tiny brush, his skin against mine, sending a pulse hooked-on-trouble-quote-graphicbetween my thighs. My sanity plummets. I shout, “Chicken,” like a lunatic as I push away from the table.

Nico’s hand slides from my knee, but his eyes don’t waver. I feel his gaze on my back as I hurry to the bathroom. The second I get inside, I close the door and lean against it, thankful it’s not a public room with several stalls. I take a few deep breaths.

EXCERPT

The breeze rolling off the ocean hits me, counteracting the heat with a deliciously salty tang, and I put my cell away, determined to be fully present in this moment. If vitamin D is the feel-good vitamin, I’m going to soak up as much as I can. I need to feel good right about now. I’m doing the most adventurous thing I’ve ever done, and no one can take that away from me.

Walking up King’s Point Drive to the beach felt like an adventure in a foreign land. People are friendlier and wear less clothing in Miami—clothing in a dazzling rainbow of colors—and a lot of women seem to wear bikini tops instead of real shirts or tank tops. Is this why they seem happier in Florida, or is it all the space? Maybe it’s just because it’s so close to the beach.

Without the tall buildings reaching high above like back home, the sky is nearly oppressively open, and I squint up at it for a moment before my eyelids pinch shut against the brightness of the sun. Shelby’s condo is on a little almost-island surrounded by water, with the Oleta River State Park on the west and the ocean a couple blocks to the east. I’m in Miami, but somehow I feel like I’m in an oasis away from it all.

Guest Post + Excerpt: “Tips For Potential NAVY SEALS” by Anne Elizabeth

Soul of a SEAL by Anne Elizabeth

My #1 Tip for Potential Navy SEALs is understand the nature of your desire. If being a Navy SEAL isn’t the #1 choice for how you want to pursue your life then choose something else. But, if you want to eat, breathe, sleep, fight, and bleed, and you are committed to the training above and beyond all things then this desire will give you a fighting chance.

My #1 Tip for Potential SEAL Wives or Girlfriends is follow your dream. Plan your life goals to be independent of your mate or boyfriend and allow yourself to achieve your greatest dream through your own sweat and dedication. It will benefit you in several ways: 1) you have something to fill your time with what you enjoy and are dedicated to doing, and that sense of achievement can never be taken away; 2) it takes the pressure off your relationship; and 3) having an independent source of income is always useful. In all ways, ‘living the best of yourself’ helps you stay happy and encourages you to continue to grow and succeed.

Excerpt:

As he turned the corner, he smacked right into her as if he had conjured her, sending her heading for the floor. He wasn’t a small guy. At six feet and 160 pounds, he was all muscle and could have been a decent wide receiver for any NFL team, even in his early forties. He ran every day, worked out, and had serious stamina for whatever task was at hand.

His hand caught hers, and with one tug he had her safely in his arms. He cradled her against him. He murmured in her ear, “Sorry about that.” His first instinct was to be polite and distant, but this contact brought a wave of protectiveness with it that made him even more uncomfortable. He needed to keep his perspective. “I always seem to be apologizing to you.”

“Must be something about me,” she murmured against his chest. Her body changed from pliant to stiff almost instantly. They were locked together for several seconds.

“Guess so.”

Exclusive Excerpt: SWEET SOUTHERN BAD BOY by Michele Summers

Sweet Southern Bad Boy Michele Summers

Finally, an excerpt for the classic Beautiful Extended Kiss category! Michele Summers has brought the heat with this delightful exclusive excerpt from Sweet Southern Bad Boy!

Vance crossed the kitchen in two long strides. “Thanks, Kat, you’re a lifesaver.” Relief flooding his face. He hooked his arm around her waist and pulled her in for a long, hard kiss. Katie resisted by pressing her palms against his rock-hard chest (well, resist might be a bit strong. More like, she pressed herself against him and looped her arms around his neck for closer contact.) The kiss deepened as he backed her against the kitchen cabinets. His rough hand moved to her throat, making her pulse jump. She savored the flavor of his mouth…coffee and forbidden wickedness. Nibbling on her lips, the kiss softened. Katie reveled in his warmth and strength. She knew she should stop, but…not yet. As if he could sense her surrender, he crushed her closer and took possession of her mouth.

“We…you…have to…stop,” she said in between nips and licks. This time she did push against him and his head lifted.

“Why?”

Katie blinked, trying to clear her kiss-befuddled head. One hand heated the small of her back; the other rested precariously close to her already excited breast. “B-because. I have a boyfriend?”

Vance looked at her as if she spoke Swahili. “Boyfriend?” His hold tightened and he swooped down for another brain-dissolving kiss as if to wipe thoughts of her boyfriend from her mind. Which he did. Quite nicely, too. Making her knees turn to wet noodles, unable to refuse… (okay, refuse might be wrong, more like surrender to burning desire).

“What’s his name?” he murmured, eating her lips as if they were made of sugar drops.

Guest Post: “Manwhore vs. THOT” by Naima Simone

Only For You Naima Simone

As a serious, unapologetic “Hell no to rehab” read-a-holic, I’ve devoured a lot of books in the last two months. And I’ve DNF’d at last three of them with a piercing, DIE NOW! scream. Why? All for the same reason: a cheating hero.

There seems to be a trend of heroes who have sex with other women in books aside from the heroine. Now, I’m not talking about a “manwhore.” Because I actually love a good manwhore hero. These are the men who, in the beginning of the book, screw anything breathing, walking and hot. They’re single, have a very high sex drive, know what to do with their equipment, and aaaaall the women want to know what he’s working with. Usually, there’s a reason behind his manwhorish ways. Fear of commitment, hurt in the past, chasing demons, seeking oblivion or just plain ol’ loves being buried deep in a woman and finds no shame in it. Manwhores are a delicious draw because they’re never disrespectful even if they freely admit no woman can ever entice them past one night of the most incredible sex they can enjoy together. Most importantly though—they are redeemable. The reader goes in knowing this hero may get around but it’s only because he hasn’t found the right woman yet. The woman who will render all others nameless and faceless. The woman who will be his world, his everything and satisfies not just his lust, but the heart that didn’t even know it was seeking a lifelong, profound, healing connection.

Exclusive Excerpt: A HEAP OF TEXAS TROUBLE by Carolyn Brown

A Heap of Texas Trouble Carolyn Brown

Know what we love more than new books from Carolyn Brown? Sneaking a peek at new books from Carolyn Brown! Check out this exclusive excerpt of A Heap of Texas Trouble!

Some men are just born stupid. Some don’t get infected until later in life, but they’ll all get a case of it sometime. It’s in their DNA and can’t be helped.

Carlene could testify with her right hand raised to God and the left on the Good Book that her husband, Lenny, had been born with the disease and it had worsened with the years. Proof was held between her thumb and forefinger like a dead rat in the form of a pair of bikini underwear. They damn sure didn’t belong to her. Hell’s bells, she couldn’t get one leg in those tiny little things. And they did not belong to Lenny either. Even if he had become an overnight cross-dresser, his ass wouldn’t fit into that skimpy pair of underbritches, not even if he greased himself down with bacon drippings.

They were bright red with a sparkling sequin heart sewn on the triangular front. They’d come with a matching corset with garter straps and fishnet hose. Carlene recognized them, because she’d designed the outfit herself at her lingerie shop, Bless My Bloomers. They belonged to a petite, size-four brunette with big brown eyes who had giggled and pranced when she saw herself in the mirror wearing the getup.

Carlene jumped when her cell phone rang. The ring tone said it was Lenny, but she was still speechless, staring at the scrap of satin in her hand.

She dropped to her knees on the carpet and bent forward into a tight ball, her blond hair falling over her face. She felt as if someone had kicked her firmly in the gut and she couldn’t breathe. In a few seconds she managed a sitting position, wrapped her arms around her midsection, and sucked in air, but it burned her lungs. The noise that came forth from her chest sounded like a wounded animal caught in a trap. Tears would have washed some of the pain away, but they wouldn’t flow from her burning green eyes. Finally, she got control of the dry heaves and managed to pull herself up out of the heap of despair. Dear God, what was she going to do?

Guest Post + Excerpt: THIS IS OUR SONG by Samantha Chase

This Is Our Song Samantha Chase

I’m one of those people who can multi-task. To a point. I do like almost complete silence while I write with the exception of my Sounds of the Ocean soundtrack playing. I can have twenty tabs open online and be on social media while I’m writing, but please don’t make me listen to anything! But amazingly enough, on most of my books I do end up with a playlist that helps me get the job done.

I just don’t listen to it while I’m writing.

I turn to it when I’m blocked – when I’m stuck in a scene and need to get hyper-focused on my characters. This is Our Song was kind of easy to have a playlist to because Riley is a musician. There were songs that I felt like I could imagine him singing or that the lyrics really applied to him.

So what was on my list and why? Here’s just one of the songs that was on my This is Our Song playlist!

Happy Release Day, Freya Barker!

Still Air Freya Barker

Can you smell it in the air? It’s that beautiful Tuesday smell of new books! What makes this Tuesday special, though? Freya Barker has a new book out and we’re foaming-at-the-mouth excited! The brilliant close to the Portland ME series, Still Air is finally out!

Deprival haunted her…

Regret troubled her…

Silence left her detached…

A life in the service of others is both penance and a blessing. She soothes her personal hell by pulling victims from theirs, helping them on their path to survival; never finding her own. When a crippling blow finally evaporates her last hope, the temptation to give up is strong. Still, she can’t find it in her to turn her back on those who need her: the innocent, whose rescue is her perpetual goal.

He was blind, but now he sees how his family has sifted through his fingers. The reality hits hard when his son becomes a stranger, slipping deeper into transgression. Concern has him call on the one person he fears will see his own failures all too clearly. A woman he’s kept his distance from for his own protection.

What appeared to be an incompatible pairing, turns out the unyielding bond needed to heal them all.

Author of the popular Cedar Tree series, as well as the critically acclaimed standalone From Dust, Freya Barker is driven to make her stories about ‘real’ people; with characters who are perhaps less than perfect, but just as deserving of romance, thrills and chills, and some hot, sizzling sex in their lives.

Recipient of the RomCon Reader’s Choice Award for best first book, Slim To None, Freya has hit the ground running. She loves nothing more than to meet and mingle with her readers, whether it be online or in person at one of the signings she attends.

With her kids grown and out in the world, Freya has poured her creative energy into spinning story after story with an endless supply of bruised and dented characters, vying for attention!

Freya can be found on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, and FreyaBarker.com.

Q&A: Tessa Bailey of WOUND TIGHT

Wound Tight Tessa Bailey

Tessa Bailey is here, and she’s brought exactly what we needed to veg out to after a long day of work: Movies. So many great movies. Tune in for an awesome chat with a fantastic author (and phenomenal lady) and don’t miss her latest M/M Romance, Wound Tight, out today!

What are your five favorite movies with romance or romantic elements?

Oooh! This is going to be fun. Here they are in no particular order!

Silver Linings Playbook: The romance between Pat and Tiffany hits me really hard every time. The progression of it, the arguing, the blowups, the moments of connection culminating in the dance contest. All of it was perfect to me.

Safety Not Guaranteed: Man puts out an ad asking for someone to help accompany him to the past in his time machine. Journalist (Aubrey Plaza) answers the ad. I won’t ruin the ending, but I dare you not to cheer when it happens. It’s amazing.

Love and Basketball: I played varsity basketball for four years in high school and whenever we rode the bus to away games, we huddled together and watched this. It’s a gorgeous movie. The couple has a lot of bumps along the way but their love wins. Young Omar Epps, you guys. Get in on this.

Bridesmaids: To me, there are two romances in this film. And my favorite is between Annie and Lillian (her best friend). It’s such a realistic portrayal of friendship between women (like, apart from the pooping in the street). The romance between Annie and Rhodes, the Irish cop, does not hurt, either.
