Guest Post: “Sit in the Chair and Write” by M.L. Buchman

Writing is a curious profession.

We humans are social animals. We work better in groups: whether hunting on African plains (something I’ve never done) or brainstorming in a corporate meeting (something I’ve done far too much of). We are more effective when we work together.

Yet writing drives us into a corner and says, “Sit alone and write.”

They say it is the profession of introverts.

I’m beginning to think that it is rather a profession that creates introverts.

I was a much more social animal in the past. I’m not the wildly out-going sort, but I did enjoy dinner parties, going to movies or a party with friends, spending a day out on a sailboat with a merry group. Over the last few decades of writing, I’ve found myself more and more comfortable being alone and by myself. I no longer am energized by the crowd and the feeling of intense activity.

I’m not becoming curmudgeonly.

I’m becoming a writer.

Guest Post: “Veterans on Campus” by Jessica Scott

I didn’t get to college the traditional route. I joined the Army in 1995 because I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up and I figured the Army was a good way for me to get some money for college. Someday, I’d go to school.

I went to school. At night, on weekends, online. It took me 10 years to get my bachelor’s degree and it was because of the Army’s education initiatives. But it was nearly 18 years into my career when I first set foot on a college campus.

It was an alienating experience of the first order. I can’t speak for other veterans. I wasn’t a young woman or man coming back from war. I was older than my cohorts in graduate school by at least a decade, closer in age to my professors than my peers. In part, I think the age was only part of the reason for my sense of alienation.

The war and my role in the Army was a large part of it. Academia is well known for it’s left leaning political views and in that, my graduate school experience was no surprise. I remember many friendly arguments about who joins the Army and why – whether military service members are just the idiots who can’t or won’t go to college or whether there is a deeper motivation to being willing to serve. We argued about the role of sexual assault in the military and I grew tired of fielding the same questions: were you ever sexually assaulted? What’s it like being in an organization like that?

Q&A: Piper J. Drake of EXTREME HONOR

1. I know research is a very important part of your process, how did you carry out your research on military dogs? What was your favorite part of that research?

I took a two-pronged approach to my dog training research for Extreme Honor.

Lyn is a civilian and referred to by others as a “dog whisperer” so I researched training techniques by Cesar Millan as a base for Lyn’s approach to understanding dog behavior in her more psychological approach with Atlas.

David is a veteran and focused on training military working dogs. Atlas and his handler were assigned to work with a Navy SEAL team prior to his handler’s death so I researched special forces training techniques by Mike Ritland, Navy SEAL, for David’s approach.

The training exercises for Atlas are very specifically geared towards his already established military working dog training, so Lyn is learning this from David. However, her own expertise is demonstrated more in her psychological approach to coaxing Atlas back into responding and wanting to work again.

Good job! You did it! It’s been several years and five books, but our time in Wellingford is at an end. If you’re feeling anything like I am, it’s bittersweet to leave behind the characters we’ve met along the way. Fear not! I have the perfect thing for your book hangover! Hair of the dog.

That’s right. You craving some hot men in uniform and romances in a small town? I’ve got you covered. Without further ado, and in no particular order:

  • Tessa Bailey’s Line of Duty series (start with Protecting What’s His). This series has it all—hot cops, hot sex, just plain hotness. No one writes dirty talking quite as amazingly as Bailey, so be sure to pack a fan and get ready to have your socks blown off. My personal favorite is Asking for Trouble, mostly because Brent is my main man. Shhh. Don’t judge me. Just wait until you read it. He’ll be your main man, too.
  • Suzanne Brockmann’s Troubleshooters series (start with The Unsung Hero). This particular series is a little more suspense than romance, but Brockmann is a master of weaving secondary characters’ stories throughout the main series until she gives them their happily ever afters. You’ll CARE about the team and since there are something like 16 books out, you’ll have plenty to read and immerse yourself in their world. I’m actually itching for a reread of these books. Someday. Over the rainbow. When I have a free week or two.
  • Jessica Lemmon’s Second Chance series (start with Bringing Home the Bad Boy). Love small towns and bad boys? Lemmon has you covered—in spades. She knows how to hit you right in the feels and amp up the sexy at the same time, for some of the most satisfying reads I’ve picked up in the last year.

I could keep going, but between these three series, you’ll be covered for a bit! We’ve got hot, we’ve got men in uniform, and we’ve got romance in a small town. All the good stuff!
