Q&A

Q&A: N.J. Walters of WOLF IN HIS HEART

We love a good Paranormal Romance. Is there anything more intriguing than an incredibly beautiful man who can transform into an equally beautiful animal or awe-striking creature whenever he wants? What goes into writing something so out of this world? Luckily, N.J. Walters, author of Wolf in His Heart, out today, is here to answer our questions about what influences her work!

FAVORITE MOVIES:

What are your five favorite movies with romance or romantic elements?

Some of my choices might surprise some people, but my absolute favorite movies with romantic elements are:

  1. The Crow. I know it’s dark and violent, but at its core it’s a love story.
  2. Ladyhawke. It’s heartbreaking.
  3. Jane Eyre. I love a dark, wounded hero.
  4. P.S. I Love You. Heartbreaking but a true love story
  5. Titanic

Describe your favorite scene from each one (you can include a Youtube clip if you want as well).

The Crow—My favorite scene is near the end of the movie where Eric and Shelly are finally united and at peace.

Ladyhawke—My favorite scene has to be the transformation one where they almost touch.

Jane Eyre—My favorite scene is again near the end when all seems lost for Rochester and Jane returns to be with him in the end.

P.S. I Love You—I don’t have a favorite scene. I love the entire movie.

Titanic—Jack gives Rose the strength to not only survive but to become who she was meant to be. My favorite scene is the one where he sketches her.

Did you have any of these scenes in mind when writing scenes from your latest release?

No, I didn’t have any of these scenes in mind when I wrote any of my books. It’s hard to explain, but my characters are real to me. So are their lives. They’re not based on anyone in real life or any real event. I might take inspiration from movies and real life, but the books take on a life of their own. I’ve always claimed I’m just taking dictation.

FIVE BOOKS

If you could only read five books for the rest of your life, what five books would they be, and why?

Wow, that’s a tough question.

  1. Night Play by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I absolutely adore Vane and Bride’s relationship. Doesn’t matter how many times I read this book it always makes me sigh.
  2. Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Those of us who read her Dark Hunter series waited years for this book and it was worth the wait. Gut wrenching and heartbreaking, but with a deep abiding love story.
  3. Lover Eternal by J.R. Ward. Rhage and Mary’s love story is one for the ages. They are both struggling with their own personal demons and with their differences, but in the end love triumphs.
  4. Beast Behaving Badly by Shelly Laurenston. Honestly, I love all her books. Her characters are unique and so much fun.
  5. Honor’s Splendor by Julie Garwood. I read this book when it was first released over 25 years ago. I love how Duncan and Madelyne bring out the best in one another and fall in love in spite of the obstacles facing them. It’s a classic.

BOOK BOYFRIENDS

Who are your book boyfriends? (list a maximum of five) What do you like about them? What characteristics do they share with the hero from your latest release?

Just five? Okay, here goes.

  1. Rhage from Lover Eternal by J.R. Ward.
  2. Vane Kattalakis from Night Play by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
  3. Roarke from the In Death series by J.D. Robb.
  4. Kaleb Krychek from Heart of Obsidian.
  5. Wolf Mackenzie from Mackenzie’s Mountain.

All these men have dark pasts. (I’m a sucker for a wounded hero…or antihero.) They live by their own code. They’re loyal and will—literally in some cases—destroy the world to protect the women they love.

Sage Gallagher from Wolf in his Heart understands loyalty. He also knows what it’s like to be different. Protecting the people he loves is as much a part of him as the color of his hair—it’s something he does without even thinking about it. He brings that kind of heart and loyalty to his relationship.

Everyone has a favorite couple (an “OTP” in ‘shipping terms) in romance, whether in a romance book, movie, or television series. Who is your favorite couple, and why?

Again, this is a tough one but I think it has to be Eve Dallas and Roarke from the In Death series by J.D. Robb. I’ve shared their lives for over forty books, from the moment they met to where they are now. I just love how they are together. They struggle with their relationship, their pasts, and their careers, trying to balance everything to make it work. They may disagree and fight but there is a bedrock of love that will never go away.

FIRST ROMANCE (AKA My First Time):

What was the first romance novel you read?

I think it might have been Honor’s Splendor. It’s hard to remember back that far. J

What do you remember about it?

I remember the opening scene where Madelyne risks everything to save Duncan, or at least she thinks she’s rescuing him. She has no idea being captured is all a part of his plan.

What did you like most about it?

I love the characters. Madelyne and Duncan are complete opposites in many ways. They bring out the best in one another and learn to rely on one another in the face of great adversity.

What did you like least about it?

There’s nothing I didn’t like about this book.

Have you ever reread it? If you did, how do you feel about it now?

Yes, I’ve reread it many times and still love it. My reading tastes have changed somewhat over the years but this book stands the test of time for me.
