FAVORITE MOVIES:

What are your five favorite movies with romance or romantic elements?

Wow, let’s see… Off the top of my head, I’d say Dracula Untold, Safe Haven, Sweet Home Alabama, Robin Hood (the Kevin Costner version), and The Princess Bride. ( I also love The Quiet Man with John Wayne and Sabrina with Harrison Ford.)

Describe your favorite scene from each one (you can include a Youtube clip if you want as well).

I liked the whole movie, but I particularly love the final scene in Dracula Untold where Vlad finds Mina and recites the poem. The whole scene speaks to me. How he’s held her in his heart all those centuries. The way he looks at her. As if he’s in awe, as if he’s suddenly found his soul. And as they walk off, the moment is filled with possibility and danger. Like their story is only just beginning.

In Safe Haven, I like the scene where they get a ride home in the police car, and Alex pushes Katie up against the tree and kisses the daylights out of her. You can see she’s finally really letting go of her past and actually beginning to look toward the future with hope. Besides, come on! Josh Duhamel is sexy as all get out in that scene!

In Sweet Home Alabama, the scene where he finds her in the pet cemetery and they kiss. You can see the flames are still burning bright between them. The longing and the desire. The conflict. And the potential. And it just makes you fall over and groan in disappointment when the kiss is broken and your heart rips in two when you see the anguish on both their faces.

Robin Hood has a lot of great scenes. Maybe when he shows her his treasure tree house, and she sees there’s another side to him. Or more so when Robin saves her from the Sheriff and the Witch at the end. How he always comes to her rescue. And how when Robin is about falling out the window Marian stabs the Sheriff, giving Robin the break he needs to turn the tables and save the day.

And The Princess Bride…it’s just such a classic. The first time I watched it I was 13. Quite an impressionable age. It spoke to me, and still does, of how Wesley wouldn’t let anything stand in the way of his love for her. How time and time again, he came to her rescue. How even when he believed she’d betrayed him by becoming engaged to another man, he was still devoted to her.

Did you have any of these scenes in mind when writing scenes from your latest release?

Not a particular scene. But there might be a bit of a reoccurring theme here. How once Sebastian actually finds Phoebe, he recognizes that they belong together, and he’ll do whatever it takes to make it happen. He saves her (or thinks he’s saving her) even though she proves to be more trouble than he bargained for. He’s protective and passionate and tries to do what he thinks is best for her even when she puts up a fight. He simply won’t throw in the towel and walk away. He’s devoted to her, and what’s more, he shows it over and over, no matter what obstacles she throws in his way.

FIVE BOOKS

If you could only read five books for the rest of your life, what five books would they be, and why?

Oh, my! That’s impossible! I adore too many. I simply couldn’t cope without my books…all of them.

BOOK BOYFRIENDS

Who are your book boyfriends? (list a maximum of five) What do you like about them? What characteristics do they share with the hero from your latest release?

Lol, I have bookshelves FILLED with them! But a girl never reads and tells. 😉

As far as characteristics though…they tend to be alpha males, dominate, aggressive. Determined. Seductive in their own way. Devoted, but not a pushover.

Everyone has a favorite couple (an “OTP” in ‘shipping terms) in romance, whether in a romance book, movie, or television series. Who is your favorite couple, and why?

Lily and Holden from As the World Turns (the old soap opera). I grew up with them. I was a teenager when they were first falling in love as teenagers themselves. It was all very romantic. And as the years went by, and life tore them apart and tossed them together over and over, it was impossible NOT to root for them.

FIRST ROMANCE (AKA My First Time):

What was the first romance novel you read?

Captive Bride by Johanna Lindsey

What do you remember about it?

The exotic setting. The chemistry. The way they were drawn to each other.

What did you like most about it?

The hero was forceful and passionate. He knew what he wanted and he went after it. He wasn’t timid, he didn’t back down.

What did you like least about it?

I don’t think I disliked anything.

Have you ever reread it? If you did, how do you feel about it now?

I’ve reread it several times throughout the years, and love it as much now as I did back then. The heroes in my own books, I believe, tend to reflect what I found appealing in Captive Bride. They see what they want, and they go after it. They are determined and dominant. A force to be reckoned with. And my heroines show spunk and courage. They bend when they need to, but they never break. And they bring a tempering effect to the hero (somewhat, lol).

Excerpt of Demon of Vengeance:

The Guardian looked so bedraggled and shell-shocked, leaning against the wall of the cave as if it were the only thing keeping her upright. Her hair was a mess. Her clothing was torn and bloodied, hanging from her in shreds. And the scent of her fear was sharp, stirring his anger.

But she blinked up at him, the will to survive written all over her beautiful face. Something jumpstarted inside his chest, as if a livewire had been hooked up directly to his soul…or the withered empty husk of what was left of his soul anyway. For a moment, he lost his purpose. Lost his train of thought. Lost his very reason for tracking her here. All he could see, all he could hear, or smell, or sense was this female. He didn’t know why, only that those stunning eyes of hers had captivated him somehow.

She flinched and readjusted her grip on her bloody shoulder.

If he could have, Sebastian would have brought every one of Sïnsobar’s minions back so he could rip them apart all over again. But his rage wouldn’t help her. And so he battled for calm. Battled to hear the voice of reason inside his own head.

Sebastian thrust his now clean hand out once more. “Come on, we have to hurry.”

Her emerald green stare turned to the mouth of the cave over a hundred yards away. He watched, awed and more than a little irritated, as she pushed to her feet and began wobbling her way toward the exit. She cut a wide arc around him, refusing his assistance. Between each unsteady step, she braced a shaking hand on the rough cave wall, leaving smears of blood in her wake. Her pace was slow and labored, but she hadn’t uttered a sound.

After what she’d just seen, after what she’d just been through, he couldn’t fathom how she was still even conscious.

She was stubborn.

She was strong.

She was…

Magnificent,” he whispered.

He wanted to let her keep whatever shreds of pride she still clung to with such fierce determination, yet he knew they didn’t have time. He hadn’t exaggerated. Sin could return at any moment.

She took a misstep and nearly went to her knees, catching herself at the last moment.

Sebastian’s heart lurched. With his chest aching in an odd, uncomfortable way, Sebastian strode forward.

“I’m sorry, professor, but we’re gonna have to do this my way.”

About Brenda Huber:

I’ve always been an avid reader. With that love of books came a passion to write them. The first romance novel I ever picked up (and probably still one of my all time favorites) was Captive Bride by Johanna Lindsey. I own every book she has out. I have too many other favorite authors that I loyally read to list, but I tend to lean more toward Paranormal Romance, of course, as well as Suspense and Historical. I am a determined gardener, despite the fact that my family claims I have a black thumb. Even I will admit that plants in my household have a 50/50 shot…but I refuse to give up. I love to study history, particularly that of the American West and Civil War, the Revolutionary War, Medieval European history, and Egyptian history. Eclectic, I know, but there it is. I prize spending time with my children above all else. I live in Iowa with my husband, my two children, and my very spoiled dog Sam.
