Q&A with Amber Garza! | YA
Amber Garza, author of the new YA novel I’M NOT IN THE BAND, stops by EverAfter to answer some of our most pressing questions! Read on!
What was your favorite aspect of pulling all of this story together? I always like the resolution, when the couple finally ends up together.
Most frustrating? I struggled a little with adding enough conflict in this story. I had to rewrite a lot of those scenes and add in more angst and problems.
FIVE BOOKS
If you could only read five books for the rest of your life, what five books would they be, and why?
Blue Diary by Alice Hoffman – Alice Hoffman is my favorite author of all time. Her writing is gorgeous. It’s poetic and beautiful, and I’m in awe of it. And I love this book. I’ve read it multiple times. It’s such an interesting story that delves into the idea that we never really know those around us.
The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger – This is my favorite love story! It drew me in from the first time I read it and I could read it again and again. Such a powerful romance. It’s a book I think about often. I love how it ended the way it began. I still sometimes take it off the bookshelf and simply re-read that last paragraph. It makes me cry every time.
Twilight by Stephanie Meyer – Okay, I’ll admit it. I’m a Twihard. I devoured these books. And I’m team Edward all the way. Such a great love story!
The Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare – I actually read the Infernal Devices series before reading the Mortal Instruments. I loved both, but the Infernal Devices were actually my favorite. I loved Will and Jem so much!
Skylight Confessions by Alice Hoffman – She has to be on here twice because I love her so much. This book was beautiful and moving. I’ve read it many times.
FIRST ROMANCE (AKA My First Time):
What was the first romance novel you read?
I honestly cannot remember what my first romance novel was. I’ve been racking my brain forever about this. But I think the first romance novel that really stayed with me was The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. I feel like this was the book that moved me away from reading mainly suspense/mystery novels and got me to start reading more romance.
What do you remember about it? I remember getting swept up in it, and crying a lot. lol
What did you like most about it? My favorite romance novels are ones about enduring love. This was one of those.
What did you like least about it? That it was sad. I prefer happy endings.
Have you ever reread it? If you did, how do you feel about it now? I have re- read it. I still love it.

ABOUT THE BOOK
I like Kassidy Milton. There, I said it. She’s funny, beautiful—even though she doesn’t know it—and my favorite kind of weird. But I can’t tell if she’s into me or just trying to get close to me for a chance with my famous twin brother instead. I mean, it has to be me. I am the better-looking one.
But Kassidy has some demons, and she’s not good at letting people in. That happens when you’ve been hurt by someone close to you. I can relate. Trust is a funny thing; it’s hard to gain but easy to lose. I might just learn that the hard way.
