Guest Post: “Special Powers Can Come in Handy” by Corrina Lawson and Robin Bielman

One of the things we love about writing paranormal romance is the fun we get to have in creating characters with abilities above and beyond mere humans. Who hasn’t wished they could fly or read someone’s mind? So we thought we’d list some of the great things about Alec and Beth in Phoenix Rising and Hugh and Tess in Veiled Target, two of the novels from the Five Past Midnight boxed set.

Corrina says…

My hero and heroine in Phoenix Rising are a firestarter/telekinetic and a telepath. This comes in handy not only in fighting the bad guys but everyday, normal activities as well.

Action + Paranormal Romance + Fantastic Characters = Jennifer Malone Wright’s KEEPER VS. REAPER

Keeper Vs. Reaper

Jennifer Malone Wright is my favorite new paranormal romance author. Jennifer is best known for The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter series, but my personal favorite of her books is Keeper vs. Reaper from the Graveyard Guardians series. What I love most about Keeper vs. Reaper is the combination of action, paranormal romance, and fantastic characters.

In Keeper vs. Reaper there are two rival families in conflict with each other. There is the Keeper family, whose main priority is to protect the souls of the graveyards while the souls are waiting to be transferred to the next life. Then there is the Reaper family, whose main goal is to consume souls that have not yet passed onto the next life because the souls give the Reapers supernatural strength. The Keeper and Reaper families are naturally supposed to stay away from each other. There is even a painful, burning sensation amongst the two if their skin touches. When the main man, Jack, is ordered by his mother to kill a Keeper, Lucy, he is puzzled to find he does not feel the painful sting when he touches Lucy.

Exclusive Excerpt: Cassi Carver’s SLAYER’S KISS

517lTMxKP4L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

The Five Past Midnight anthology from Samhain Publishing releases next week! Today we have Cassi Carver sharing an exclusive excerpt from her book, Slayer’s Kiss. We hope you enjoy and pre-order your copy of the anthology today!

When the past flies in your face, clip its wings.

Kara Reed is a supernatural failure. But where her magic falls short, her fists get the job done. The criminal element doesn’t stand a chance once she hits San Diego’s dark streets.

When two smoking-hot tenants move in next door, she thinks her love life might finally be heating up. Just being near Gavin and Julian is enough to make her want to offer her body on a platter.

Gavin and Julian know it’s only a matter of time before the truth comes out. They’re fallen angels sent to watch over the king’s daughter, one of the last females of her kind. Trouble is, she doesn’t seem to think she needs watching—unless they’re watching her shimmy out of her clothes.

No matter how tempting her guardians, Kara’s not about to let anything stop her from tracking down a sadistic killer who carves into his victims and leaves them for dead. Even when she realizes her target may be the very scourge of heaven from which her angels swore to protect her…

Product Warnings
Contains a kick-ass heroine with a foul mouth, a kind heart and a raging libido, and two fallen angel warriors who wouldn’t have her any other way. Watch out for sex in the clouds, a magical island of hedonism and a love triangle that gives new meaning to the term “hot-wings”.

She kept her gaze trained on the door, even while mixing two martinis and a rum and Coke, otherwise she never would have glimpsed Gavin Cross appear on the other side of the glass, head bowed, talking through something serious with a striking man with shiny black hair and a body almost as massive as Gavin’s.

After a quick handshake, just a fleeting grasp of one wrist to another, Gavin broke away from the other man and came through the door. His gaze arrowed through the crush of bodies and landed squarely on Kara.

Her mouth went dry. Tha-thump. Tha-thump. Her heart throttled from zero to sixty in one glance, hammering as if she’d run a hundred miles through the desert.

Exclusive Excerpt: WOLF FROM THE PAST by N.J. Walters

Wolf From The Past N.J. Walters

This week N.J. Walters’ new book, Wolf From The Past hit shelves and we’ve got an exclusive excerpt to share with you! Hope you enjoy and pick up your copy today!

Is there anything sexier than a man who likes to cook?

Most women are charmed by a man who knows his way around the kitchen. I think it speaks to our primal instincts. Our men no longer have to hunt for food. (They can, but most men just head to the supermarket and pick up a pack of steaks to toss on the barbeque.) By cooking a special meal, a man is showing his woman and his family just how much he cares.

I knew the first moment Gator Rollins stepped onto the pages of Wolf at the Door, the first Salvation Pack book, that he was special. Even though he seems laidback, he’s earned his nickname. He’s fast and deadly when it comes to protecting those he loves. He’s one tattooed, badass wolf.

Aural Pleasures: ILLUSION by Lea Nolan

Illusion Lea Nolan

Thanks so much for having me here at EverAfter Romance! I’m so excited to introduce you to Illusion, the third and final book in my Hoodoo Apprentice trilogy, which is out now, and to share a little insight on the music that inspired this book and the others in the series, Conjure and Allure.

Things aren’t always as they appear…

New school. Cross-country move. Broken heart. If only these were Emma Guthrie’s worst problems. Instead, she must battle a trio of enemies–human and spectral–who may or may not have joined forces against her and everyone she loves. All while pretending to be over Cooper Beaumont, her ex-boyfriend and true love, to shield him from her arch-nemesis’s revenge.

Worse, when the fight escalates, Emma is tempted to use black magic, which will endanger her soul. As her enemies close in, join forces, and fight with new and dark magic she’s never seen before, Emma must harness the power within her to fulfill an ancient prophecy, defeat a centuries-old evil, save her family, and reclaim the only boy she’s ever loved.

1. How do you make your playlists for your books?

I start with the book’s theme or what I have planned for the characters’ emotional arc and then try to match the tone of the music to what I expect the book will be about. So if there’s going to be a lot of sad or scary stuff happening I’m not going to pick a fun, up beat song. Instead, chances are I’ll find a tune that makes me want to curl into a ball and rock in a corner under a ton of blankets. In Conjure, the series’ first book, Emma had a massive and unrequited crush on her best friend, Cooper Beaumont. She loves every single thing about him and nearly falls to piece whenever he looks her way. To me, that feeling was captured by Colbie Caillat’s Bubby.

Blood Smoke and Mirrors

Next week the Five Past Midnight anthology releases from Samahin Publishing with novels by Anne Hope, Corrina Lawson, Robyn Bachar, Cassi Carver, and Robin Bielman included! The café had a decent amount of customers when we arrived, despite the fact that it was the lull between breakfast and lunch. I set Tybalt up in a booth with a plate full of pancakes and a Chicago Tribune, and then hoped for the best. Squaring my shoulders, I pasted my friendly customer-service smile on my face and began my shift. My section kept me too busy to worry about silly details like the fate of magician/faerie relations throughout the Midwest. As closing approached, we had only three customers left in the café: a young newlywed couple who were regulars seated in my section, and Lex, who’d snuck in at some point and was sitting drinking a cup of coffee over in Maria’s section. She’d left early, of course, and I’d been ignoring him in the hope he’d leave, but he seemed determined to stay. Annoyed, I stopped at his table, coffee carafe in hand.

Aural Pleasures: LOVE, LIKE GHOSTS by Ally Blue

Love Like Ghosts Ally Blue

Ally Blue writes evocative male/male romance set in a paranormal world. The final book in her Bay City Paranormal Investigation series, Love, Like Ghosts, provides a satisfying ending, encompassing a range of emotions. Ally’s playlist for the book is equally diverse, and she’s here to share the songs that inspired her while writing the book. Thanks, Ally!

Hello dear readers. My name’s Ally Blue, and I’m here to speak of the profound connection between writing and music. Specifically, between music and writing my gay romance novel Love, Like Ghosts.

Ever since I can remember, music has been an important part of my life. One of my earliest memories is of my dad playing Johnny Cash on his guitar, the whole family singing along. I cut my musical teeth on classic country, Flower Child rock, and Broadway tunes. Now, with some thirty books under my proverbial belt, I still make a playlist for nearly every new project before I start writing. Something to set the mood and help keep my mind in The Zone. My choices probably don’t make much sense to anyone but me. But after all, isn’t music the most personal of the arts? The one most deeply connected to our primitive brains? The most intimately tangled with our emotions? In my very humble opinion, if a song or a piece of music doesn’t make you feel something, then it’s not doing its job. The same might be said of a book, I think.
