Deal Alert: John Grogan, Susan Ee, and Celeste Easton

Our second deal alert features books from John Grogan, Susan Ee, and Celeste Easton! Grab these today!

Marley & Me by John Grogan

The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family in the making and the wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life.

John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.

Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women’s undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelry. Obedience school did no good—Marley was expelled. Neither did the tranquilizers the veterinarian prescribed for him with the admonishment, “Don’t hesitate to use these.”

And yet Marley’s heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple’s joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Marley shut down a public beach and managed to land a role in a feature-length movie, always winning hearts as he made a mess of things. Through it all, he remained steadfast, a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit’s end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.

Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans.

Angelfall by Susan Ee

It’s been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they journey toward the angels’ stronghold in San Francisco, where Penryn will risk everything to rescue her sister and Raffe will put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

Guest Post: “Top 5 Classic Sads” by Heidi R. Kling

Not Okay Cupid Heidi R Kling

Everyone knows these movies. There the ones we hate-love. The ones that make us bawl our eyes out when, years later, the theme music comes on in some random elevator. (You know the one.) In Not Okay, Cupid, the protagonist, Hazel, finds out her sleazy boyfriend is cheating on her with her best friend. In one instant, her perfectly-organized life goes from dreamy to nightmarish. And her perfectly-planned future crashes around her. Hazel’s mom is a movie critic who coined the term “Classic Sads” and she has a go-to list of the movies she watches when she’s sad. When the only thing that will help is a giant bowl of chocolate ice cream and a good cry.

Here are some of her favorites. I will rate them in tears from one to five.

Guest Post: “How to Turn Your Best Friend Into Your Boyfriend” By Jodie Andrefski

The Girlfriend Request Jodie Andrefski

You and he have something really special—you laugh at the same jokes, like the same movies (well, mostly!), and you can turn to him when you need a shoulder to cry on. You know he’s got your back. And all of that is great, but you’re ready to see if you can turn friendship into something more…but you’re afraid you may ruin that friendship if you wander into new territory. After all, what if he doesn’t feel the same?

I’ve listed some of my favorite “friends to more” examples from books and movies. Maybe take a page from their love story and see if it can work for you too. Can you name what book or movie each is from? Comment your guesses and I will select a random winner from each person who answers to win an ebook of THE GIRLFRIEND REQUEST. Have fun!

1.         Find your local horocrux in a chamber of secrets and destroy it. If the adrenaline rush causes him to kiss you, you may just be destined to be more than friends.

2.         Lock yourself in a closet on your birthday and allow some enchanted glitter to fall on you and send you forward in time seventeen years. Did your BFF turn into a hunky photographer who makes your senses reel? Then take the chance, tell him how you really feel when you find yourself back in the closet and plant one on him. He’s definitely a keeper.

3.         Does he sparkle? If so, you may want to watch out since this tends to prompt a rather large scale love-triangle. Proceed with caution if your other male best friend seems to possess a love for dogs.

4.         Does he visit you at night in the opera house where you live? His love, though overbearing, is definitely there for the taking. Just be careful if he takes you on a boat ride to his hidden lair.

5.         If you find yourself in Paris and find yourself drawn to a super sweet guy who just happens to be taken, don’t lose hope. You never know what can happen. After all, it’s the city of love, right?

The reality is, you want to make sure that you’re ready to take the step of moving from best friend to more. When it works, it can be magic. The building blocks of any successful relationship starts with a solid friendship. If you believe there is something more there, talk to him and let him know how you feel. After all, if he is your best friend, even if it doesn’t work as more than friends, you will both treasure your relationship and fight to keep it. Most importantly of all, remember to be open and honest. Real communication is the way to go. Avoid making the mistakes Emma made with Eli, which almost cost her not only a relationship, but also her best friend. Remember, real love is worth taking a leap of faith.

Jodie AndrefskiJodie Andrefski has been passionate about reading ever since she was a little girl, when she used to climb trees to escape with a favorite book. She now lives and writes in a small town in Pennsylvania with her teenage daughter. Though still an avid reader, she now prefers a comfy chair over the crook of a tree. An unapologetic coffee fiend, she’s even happier if her java comes with pie. Jodie often draws on her background in education and mental health counseling to bring real world experience to her writing. She is a firm believer in the magic of a first kiss, and insists that you should never, ever give up on your dreams.

Guest Post: Kate Jarvik Birch on Making Successful Long-Distance Relationships

Tarnished Kate Jarvik Birch

In my latest novel, Tarnished, my main character Ella is forced into a long distance relationship. Granted, it isn’t your typical LDR, considering the fact that Ella is on the run, hiding from a man who wants to own her, and others who’d like to see her dead. Like Ella, sometimes circumstances are out of your control and you might have to find a way to keep a relationship alive even when you’re not next to the person you love.

Here are a few tips on how to help stay connected even when there are thousands of miles between you.

Consent Nancy Ohlin

Forbidden romances make for great reading.  They can be great in real life, too.  But what is the line between a romantic forbidden romance and a wildly inappropriate one?

Consent skirts the line between the two.  Bea is a seventeen-year-old piano prodigy.  Dane is her twenty-seven-year-old music history teacher.  They develop an intense student-mentor bond; they also fall for each other.  And despite their best efforts to keep their mutual feelings at bay, their relationship eventually turns sexual.

Guest Post: “Love In Unexpected Places” by Tera Lynn Childs

Ten Things Sloane Hates About Tru Tera Lynn Childs

Sometimes the best things come when you least expect them.

My parents met at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival in the summer of 1965. The last thing my mom was looking for was to meet a guy, but she took one look at my dad and it was all over. They knew from their first date that they wanted to get married and they were together until my dad passed in 2011. My mom has always said that love will come when you’re not looking for it—which is possibly why I’m still single, because I’m always looking.

In a lot of ways, that part of my parents’ story is at the heart of the romantic relationships in many of my books. Like my mom, the last thing Sloane Whitaker in Ten Things Sloane Hates About Tru wants to do is fall for a guy in Texas. All she wants is to get back to her real life in New York City, so forming attachments in Austin is the worst possible idea. But when two characters who are meant to be together wind up crossing paths…well, there’s not much they can do to stop the steamroller that’s heading their way.
