Guest Post: “The Heart of the Matter” by Anise Eden

All The Broken Places Anise Eden

With due apology to all of the writers who have labored over the books I’ve read, I have been known to flip past beautifully written passages about very important things just to find out what happens next in the romantic subplot. Even as a child, before I was reading about romantic love, what I cared about in stories were the relationships—between friends, siblings, parents and children, characters and their pets—anything that made a heart-to-heart connection.

When I wrote my first novel, All the Broken Places, I didn’t set out to write a romance, but I suppose it should come as no surprise that I did. The heart has always been where I live, and it is also where the wellspring of my inspiration lies.

One of the best things about writing romance is that the subject of love is so rich. It includes many of our most compelling human experiences—loyalty, sacrifice, intimacy, generosity, humor, forgiveness, persistence, empathy, and sympathy, among other things. Love is a dazzling kaleidoscope of our existence. Perhaps that is the reason why it has been the driving force behind so much of our behavior, including so many of our creative endeavors.

Cover Reveals

Cover Reveal: IRRESISTIBLY YOURS by Lark Brennan

Today we have the cover reveal of Lark Brennan’s new book, Irresistibly Yourswhich will be out June 21st, 2016! It is the second in The Durand Chronicles series and we’re so thrilled to see it! Here’s a bit about the book from Lark herself:

It’s so exciting to see finished covers for the first time, and this one for Irresistibly Yours captures the glamour, intensity, and Parisian setting of the second book of the Durand Chronicles so beautifully!

Each book in the Durand series is set in one of my favorite places. The first, Dangerously Yours, takes place in the Virgin Islands where I spent several years diving and sailing. Lex Durand’s world was further inspired by the Cousteau teams who studied marine life in the islands, but with a twist—she’s an animal telepath who can communicate with the whales and dolphins she encounters. When one of her whales vanishes, she blackmails the reclusive Bodie Flynn into helping her solve the mystery, and together they wrestle with the dark side of the beautiful Caribbean.

Where Dangerously Yours celebrates the natural world, Irresistibly Yours is set in my favorite city—Paris. The City of Lights is the ancestral home of the Durand family and the place that gives them their psychic abilities. In Paris readers are introduced to new family members and further drawn in to the tricky dynamics within the ultra-wealthy, multinational and multi-talented Durands. Readers can also see Paris for the first time through the eyes of Tate, a young American who finds herself in a world that’s not just foreign but also mysterious and extremely dangerous – much like the tall dark stranger she meets by something more than chance – Adrien Durand.

In many ways, the idea for the whole series started with Adrien, head of the Durand family and one of the most powerful psychics in the world. On a rainy January day in Paris, my husband and I were strolling down the rue du Bac when a window display of framed insect specimens caught his eye. We went into the charming little garden shop, browsed for a few minutes, and were about to leave when the woman behind the counter told us we absolutely must go upstairs. We weren’t expecting much, but it was raining and cold outside so we climbed the worn stairs and emerged among Deyrolle’s incredible collection of taxidermy animals—featuring every species from elephants and giraffes to donkeys, wolves, rabbits, and even mice–all posed as though they are having a jolly time in the elegant townhouse. Then and there I fell in love with the place and every creature in it.

Now whenever I visit Paris I pop into Deyrolle at some point, and I’ve often taken friends with me to introduce them to my favorite place in the city. Knowing how much I love the place, people began sending me magazine and newspaper articles about it. The New York Times called Deyrolle “The Shop of Wild Dreams.” A French pop star filmed a music video in the animal galleries. Woody Allen shot a scene of Midnight in Paris there. It seemed that Deyrolle was the most famous obscure place in Paris. One day I joked to my husband, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the man who owned Deyrolle could bring the animals to life when no one was around?” That imaginary man later became Adrien Durand, and Irresistibly Yours is his story.

Of course, Adrien’s Maison d’Ermonie is a much different place than the real-life Deyrolle, and his world more dangerous and magical than life on the rue du Bac. And his story is totally the product of my imagination. Still, whenever I climb those wooden stairs to the upstairs galleries, I like to pretend the animals are happy to see me again.

And now for that cover reveal! Drum roll please:

My Never-End TBR List: Taking One For The Team by Rebekah Weatherspoon

If you’re keeping score, so far I’ve managed to knock two more titles off my massive list. Forbidden by Beverly Jenkins (5 stars) and Level Up by Cathy Yardley (also 5 stars). I won’t say how many books I’ve added to the list. It’s a lot and here are six more to pile on to the sweet sweet torture. I haven’t read many romances that focus on athletes. I actually think I’ve only read two, both by Farrah Rochon (You should check out Huddle With Me Tonight and the rest of her New York Sabers series. Good stuff.) Thanks to all the book browsing I’ve been doing for WOCInRomance, I’ve come across quite a few sports based romances that have caught my eye.

Rookie of the Year by Charity Pineiro (Baseball)

Alicia Santos knows she shouldn’t be tempted by the team’s new rookie catcher. . .

But Joe Fernandez isn’t just your average baseball player. He’s a potential rookie of the year with amazing skills on the field. Smart, sexy and determined, he’s fought hard for everything in his life and Alicia appreciates that kind of focus. But she’s older and wiser, or so she thinks, until Joe sets his sights on winning her over off the field. . .

Joe Fernandez has never backed down from a challenge . . .

Especially when it’s a woman like his team’s beautiful trainer. He doesn’t mind that she’s older or stubbornly refusing to give into her attraction for him. He’s a patient man and little by little he wears away her resistance.

Nights spent together are glorious and forbidden . . .

Alicia and Joe work hard to keep their personal and professional lives apart to avoid problems on the baseball field. When a career-ending injury threatens their newfound love, Alicia and Joe must find the strength to rebuild Joe’s body and restore balance to their lives.

This has a few taboos for me. Sex in the workplace is can always be tricky, but something tells me this is going to be steamy as hell. Give it to me.

Exclusive Excerpt: M.L. Buchman’s BY BREAK OF DAY

By Break of Day M.L. Buchman

Today we’ve got an exclusive excerpt of M.L. Buchman’s absolutely fiery By Break of Day! This book is available February 2nd, 2016.

A Note from M.L. Buchman

Captain Justin Roberts flies a massive Chinook helicopter. After a training, the team has returned to the helicopter carrier USS Peleliu and is debriefing about Captain Kara Moretti’s first mission as the Air Mission Commander. At least everyone else is. Justin is having a few issues with just what he’s concentrating on now that the flight is over.

Women didn’t make Justin Roberts feel like a yokel, nor men either. But Kara Moretti most certainly did. No way he’d have seen what to do with five aircraft in the fifteen seconds she’d had to retarget the attack.

Even feeling the fool, he wanted to get closer to her. Being near her was more important than… His mind was already lost. Either he should sit close by her, or he should step off the ship’s stern to soak his head in the ocean a while.

To see if there was a spot near her, he turned slowly so that it wouldn’t show quite where his attention was focused.

Don’t mind me. Just casually scanning the debriefing room and sipping my coffee—Crap!—black because I forget to put in cream and two sugars.

Q&A: Piper J. Drake of EXTREME HONOR

Extreme Honor Piper J. Drake

Today Piper J. Drake’s new book, Extreme Honor was released and she’s stopped by EverAfter to answer our questions! We hope you enjoy her answers. Be sure and pick up Extreme Honor today!

1. I know research is a very important part of your process, how did you carry out your research on military dogs? What was your favorite part of that research?

I took a two-pronged approach to my dog training research for Extreme Honor.

Lyn is a civilian and referred to by others as a “dog whisperer” so I researched training techniques by Cesar Millan as a base for Lyn’s approach to understanding dog behavior in her more psychological approach with Atlas.

David is a veteran and focused on training military working dogs. Atlas and his handler were assigned to work with a Navy SEAL team prior to his handler’s death so I researched special forces training techniques by Mike Ritland, Navy SEAL, for David’s approach.

The training exercises for Atlas are very specifically geared towards his already established military working dog training, so Lyn is learning this from David. However, her own expertise is demonstrated more in her psychological approach to coaxing Atlas back into responding and wanting to work again.

Q&A: HOLD YOUR BREATH’s Katie Ruggle

Hold Your Breath Katie Ruggle

Katie Ruggle is the author of an upcoming romantic suspense Search & Rescue series. The first book in the series, Hold Your Breath, doesn’t release until April 5th but you can get a taste of the series by downloading the free prequel novella, On His Watch, which is available now. We asked Katie to stop by and answer a few rapid fire questions! Welcome Katie Ruggle!

Chocolate or Vanilla?

Both please! If I have to choose, I’d pick vanilla—the fancy kind with real beans. Mmm…vanilla. Now I’m going to need dessert after my pizza and margarita dinner.

Pepsi or Coke?

Eh, neither really. I’ve never been a pop drinker, except when doing long drives from Colorado to Minnesota and needing caffeine but not wanting to get that fast-talking-and-possible-heart-attack-having feeling from coffee (see “Coffee or Tea” answer above). Honestly, I can’t taste a difference between Pepsi and Coke.

What is something you know you need to stop doing?

So many things… I need to quit checking my reviews; eating so many cookies; obsessing over comma placement and whether or not to use subjunctive tense while I’m writing (the grammar nerd in me can’t help it!); considering popcorn and Hot Tamales candy a balanced meal; procrastinating and just unpack those final two moving boxes tucked upstairs, out of sight.

I never get tired of ___ ?

Fun one! Reading good books; talking about said good books with others who are just as excited about them as I am; writing what will hopefully be good books; walking in the woods right after it snows when the only other tracks besides mine and the dogs’ are wild creatures’; riding horses; learning new things, especially those that make me feel strong and brave; target shooting (I love the smell of gunpowder—odd, right?); spending time with my family (they’re overall awesome people); SCUBA diving; helping others in a crisis (or just with something small); getting to know my (sometimes quirky) neighbors; being as self-sufficient as possible; visiting new places. Okay, I’ll stop now. 🙂

When she’s not writing, Katie Ruggle rides horses, shoots guns, and travels to warm places where she can SCUBA dive. Graduating from the Police Academy, Katie received her ice-rescue certification and can attest that the reservoirs in the Colorado mountains really are that cold. While she still misses her off-grid, solar- and wind-powered house in the Rocky Mountains, she now lives in Rochester, Minnesota near her family.

Katie can be found on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and

Guest Post: Charity Beecham Reads The Blue Effect, Episode One by Rose Shababy

The Blue Effect, Episode One- Paper Dolls (Renegade Heroes Book 1) Rose Shababy

Have you ever had that feeling that you were not where you were meant to be? The faces you passed every day, the job you routinely work, or the house you live in is just not where you are meant to be? Well, that is exactly how Blue feels in The Blue Effect, Episode One: Paper Dolls (Renegade Heroes Book 1) by Rose Shababy. Her whole life she dealt with abuse from her mother, instability, and lack of true love.

It finally got to the point where her mother would just stay drink 24/7. Guest Post: “Not Your Mother’s Romance Heroine…” by Jodi Linton

Rebel Love Jodi Linton

There’s something enticing about breaking the rules, wouldn’t you say? And what better way to cross a few lines than to place a female character as the MC president in a genre where men usually rule the patch.

I say nothing at all. Give me the modern day heroine who can spew a few curse words, crack a crass joke, and drink beers with the boys, and I’m sold.

That’s exactly why in my latest release, Rebel Love, I made the president of my MC club a female. For the past three years I’ve been writing romance and with each new novel I try to twist the norm on its head. Whether it’s a feisty take-no-prisoners deputy sheriff out in west Texas, with a mouth like a sailor, to a female running a motorcycle club… I want my heroines to have the capability to go toe-to-toe with the hero. I like my heroines to be able to look that hero in the face and say, “Well, badass, sometimes it takes a woman to do a man’s job.”

Exclusive Excerpt: BLOOD ORCHID by Jenna Ryan

Blood Orchid Jenna Ryan

Blood Orchid by Jenna Ryan released earlier this month from Samhain and we’ve got an exclusive excerpt for you! We hope you enjoy! Be sure and pick up your copy of Blood Orchid today!

Ten o’clock had come and gone by the time Kate Marshall exchanged her hospital scrubs for a pair of faded jeans, a billed cap, and a rapidly growing anger that demanded an outlet.  Calling him every unflattering name she could think of, she went in search of Jason Nolan.

It didn’t require much brainpower to figure out where he’d be.  When someone from St. Mark’s wanted to get drunk and wallow, that person headed straight for the last remaining stretch of derelict waterfront in the city and did the Barbary Coast thing until he or she passed out or wound up in jail.

Either scenario worked for Kate, but only after she’d slashed Nolan into a thousand bloody pieces.

She started with Shanghai Lily’s for the simple reason that it was the most disreputable of the three bars in the area.  The low, ugly building squatted under a pier that was as badly in need of demolition as the business it sheltered.

Thick fog shrouded the walls and blacked-out windows as Kate pushed her way inside.  Her grandfather claimed Lily’s was the final resting place for every opium addict who’d ever passed through its nineteenth-century doors.  Good old Grandpa.  At ninety-three, what did he care if believing in ghosts wasn’t tolerated in the Marshall family?  Intolerance didn’t make a thing impossible.
