Guest Post: “The Doctor Phenomenon” by Kaylie Newell

The Moonshadow's Daughter Kaylie Newell

Our hero in The Moonshadow’s Daughter is Jake Blackstock, a small town hottie doctor (emphasis on hottie).  I wanted him to be an average guy (a little better looking than usual, but still) who’s a single dad and very good at his job.  He’s not a surgeon, not particularly powerful or all-knowing.  He’s just a family doctor.  But I think for most of us, that’ll do it.  Sigh.  A doctor.

Just what is it about doctors that make our ovaries flutter in appreciation, anyway?  For me, I think it’s the fact that they’re so capable.  That’s definitely attractive.  There’s also something about wanting to be taken care of.  No matter how strong the woman, or how in control she is of her life, I think most of us romance-loving types swoon at the idea of being taken care of.

Doctors also see us at our most vulnerable- when we’re sick or injured.  Putting your complete trust in someone when you’re in that condition is a big deal.  It’s also kind of hot.  Even if your doctor is pudgy and bald, there’s a reason we all shave our legs for him, am I right? I had an appointment with my doctor the other day and I put on my special occasion lip gloss.  Stupid.  Really.  Especially since I’m happily married and my doctor (bless him) looks like Bill Nye The Science Guy.  But he’s my doctor, so the lip gloss and shaved legs are a given.  It’s just how we female types roll, I guess.

I don’t really understand the MD phenomenon.  We can theorize why they affect us the way they do, and a lot of the time we probably come pretty close.  But at the end of the day it’s likely something different for each and every one of us.  But it’s my hope that Jake Blackstock (sex) appeals to everyone!

Happy reading 😉

Aural Pleasures: “The ‘Muse’ in Music” by Anne Hope

Five Past Midnight Robin Bielman, Robyn Bachar, Cassi Carver, Anne Hope, Corrina Lawson

Today we have author Anne Hope sharing her thoughts on music as well as the songs that were on the playlists of the authors of the Five Past Midnight anthology! We hope you enjoy their selections and pick up the anthology today!

Music is one of life’s greatest inspirations. A good song provokes not only thought, but emotion. Lyrics have the ability to touch us on a deep level, to spark ideas within us and heighten our senses. It’s no surprise that many authors find their muse in music, and I’m no exception.

Remember when we discussed memorable first lines in romance? This one from Angie Fox’s The Accidental Demon Slayer, is a doozie. It sets the tone for what you can expect from the rest of the book, it creates a sense of urgency, and its humor comes from the specificity of the details.

The Accidental Demon Slayer is free right now, so you can read the rest.

When I opened the door to greet my grandmother for the very first time, I’m not sure what I was expecting. I know I hadn’t envisioned an apple-shaped woman in a Kiss My Asphalt T-shirt, with windburned cheeks and a sagging tattoo of a phoenix on her arm. But what I really didn’t bargain for was a brief hug, followed by a forceful shove that had me landing firmly on my butt on the cold, black-and-white checked floor of my hall bathroom.

Guest Post: “Special Powers Can Come in Handy” by Corrina Lawson and Robin Bielman

One of the things we love about writing paranormal romance is the fun we get to have in creating characters with abilities above and beyond mere humans. Who hasn’t wished they could fly or read someone’s mind? So we thought we’d list some of the great things about Alec and Beth in Phoenix Rising and Hugh and Tess in Veiled Target, two of the novels from the Five Past Midnight boxed set.

Corrina says…

My hero and heroine in Phoenix Rising are a firestarter/telekinetic and a telepath. This comes in handy not only in fighting the bad guys but everyday, normal activities as well.

Action + Paranormal Romance + Fantastic Characters = Jennifer Malone Wright’s KEEPER VS. REAPER

Keeper Vs. Reaper

Jennifer Malone Wright is my favorite new paranormal romance author. Jennifer is best known for The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter series, but my personal favorite of her books is Keeper vs. Reaper from the Graveyard Guardians series. What I love most about Keeper vs. Reaper is the combination of action, paranormal romance, and fantastic characters.

In Keeper vs. Reaper there are two rival families in conflict with each other. There is the Keeper family, whose main priority is to protect the souls of the graveyards while the souls are waiting to be transferred to the next life. Then there is the Reaper family, whose main goal is to consume souls that have not yet passed onto the next life because the souls give the Reapers supernatural strength. The Keeper and Reaper families are naturally supposed to stay away from each other. There is even a painful, burning sensation amongst the two if their skin touches. When the main man, Jack, is ordered by his mother to kill a Keeper, Lucy, he is puzzled to find he does not feel the painful sting when he touches Lucy.

Exclusive Excerpt: Cassi Carver’s SLAYER’S KISS

The Five Past Midnight anthology from Samhain Publishing releases next week! Today we have Cassi Carver sharing an exclusive excerpt from her book, Slayer’s Kiss. We hope you enjoy and pre-order your copy of the anthology today!

When the past flies in your face, clip its wings.

Kara Reed is a supernatural failure. But where her magic falls short, her fists get the job done. The criminal element doesn’t stand a chance once she hits San Diego’s dark streets.

When two smoking-hot tenants move in next door, she thinks her love life might finally be heating up. Just being near Gavin and Julian is enough to make her want to offer her body on a platter.

Gavin and Julian know it’s only a matter of time before the truth comes out. They’re fallen angels sent to watch over the king’s daughter, one of the last females of her kind. Trouble is, she doesn’t seem to think she needs watching—unless they’re watching her shimmy out of her clothes.

No matter how tempting her guardians, Kara’s not about to let anything stop her from tracking down a sadistic killer who carves into his victims and leaves them for dead. Even when she realizes her target may be the very scourge of heaven from which her angels swore to protect her…

Product Warnings
Contains a kick-ass heroine with a foul mouth, a kind heart and a raging libido, and two fallen angel warriors who wouldn’t have her any other way. Watch out for sex in the clouds, a magical island of hedonism and a love triangle that gives new meaning to the term “hot-wings”.

She kept her gaze trained on the door, even while mixing two martinis and a rum and Coke, otherwise she never would have glimpsed Gavin Cross appear on the other side of the glass, head bowed, talking through something serious with a striking man with shiny black hair and a body almost as massive as Gavin’s.

After a quick handshake, just a fleeting grasp of one wrist to another, Gavin broke away from the other man and came through the door. His gaze arrowed through the crush of bodies and landed squarely on Kara.

Her mouth went dry. Tha-thump. Tha-thump. Her heart throttled from zero to sixty in one glance, hammering as if she’d run a hundred miles through the desert.

Exclusive Excerpt: WOLF FROM THE PAST by N.J. Walters

Wolf From The Past N.J. Walters

This week N.J. Walters’ new book, Wolf From The Past hit shelves and we’ve got an exclusive excerpt to share with you! Hope you enjoy and pick up your copy today!

Is there anything sexier than a man who likes to cook?

Most women are charmed by a man who knows his way around the kitchen. I think it speaks to our primal instincts. Our men no longer have to hunt for food. (They can, but most men just head to the supermarket and pick up a pack of steaks to toss on the barbeque.) By cooking a special meal, a man is showing his woman and his family just how much he cares.

I knew the first moment Gator Rollins stepped onto the pages of Wolf at the Door, the first Salvation Pack book, that he was special. Even though he seems laidback, he’s earned his nickname. He’s fast and deadly when it comes to protecting those he loves. He’s one tattooed, badass wolf.

Aural Pleasures: ILLUSION by Lea Nolan

Illusion Lea Nolan

Thanks so much for having me here at EverAfter Romance! I’m so excited to introduce you to Illusion, the third and final book in my Hoodoo Apprentice trilogy, which is out now, and to share a little insight on the music that inspired this book and the others in the series, Conjure and Allure.

Things aren’t always as they appear…

New school. Cross-country move. Broken heart. If only these were Emma Guthrie’s worst problems. Instead, she must battle a trio of enemies–human and spectral–who may or may not have joined forces against her and everyone she loves. All while pretending to be over Cooper Beaumont, her ex-boyfriend and true love, to shield him from her arch-nemesis’s revenge.

Worse, when the fight escalates, Emma is tempted to use black magic, which will endanger her soul. As her enemies close in, join forces, and fight with new and dark magic she’s never seen before, Emma must harness the power within her to fulfill an ancient prophecy, defeat a centuries-old evil, save her family, and reclaim the only boy she’s ever loved.

1. How do you make your playlists for your books?

I start with the book’s theme or what I have planned for the characters’ emotional arc and then try to match the tone of the music to what I expect the book will be about. So if there’s going to be a lot of sad or scary stuff happening I’m not going to pick a fun, up beat song. Instead, chances are I’ll find a tune that makes me want to curl into a ball and rock in a corner under a ton of blankets. In Conjure, the series’ first book, Emma had a massive and unrequited crush on her best friend, Cooper Beaumont. She loves every single thing about him and nearly falls to piece whenever he looks her way. To me, that feeling was captured by Colbie Caillat’s Bubby.
