Favorite Female Romantic Suspense Leads by Layla Reyne

unnamed
In Tequila Sunrise, releasing November 13, Melissa Cruz takes center stage with her lock-pick lover, Daniel Talley. A former FBI Special Agent in Charge who is now a bounty hunter and Chief of Security for the family business, Mel is all alpha. She’s the woman who keeps a team of alpha-males in line, and she does it all in designer heels. Mel follows a long line of badass leading lady in romantic suspense series. If you’re a fan like I am, here are a few of my favorites:

Eve DallasIn Death Series by JD Robb – Eve is one of, if not the, gold standard in this romantic suspense leading ladies. She’s a top-notch detective who likewise wrangles the guys around her, most formidably her husband, Roarke. She’s competent, lethal, but still has plenty of flaws and struggles to make her relatable, and to make her interesting enough for 50+ books!

Kate BeckettCastle (ABC) – While Castle bordered on romantic suspense and romantic comedy, there’s no question that Homicide Detective Kate Beckett was the leading lady. And she always led with grace, beauty and brains. Juggling her team of Rick, Ryan and Esposito, they solved often-times dangerous cases, uncovered the truth behind Kate’s mother’s death, and formed a tight knit family that saw them through the best and worst of times.

Sienna LaurenPsy-Changeling Series by Nalini Singh – Sienna first appears in the series as a headstrong teen with remarkable psy abilities. She’s also got an independent streak a mile-wide. She’s a young Psy-alpha, still trying to find her way and harness her power, and that way leads to SnowDancer Alpha wolf Hawke. Together, Sienna and Hawke are fiery and volatile, and also, once the alpha-female Psy, with Hawke’s help, learns to harness her power, they are a force to be reckoned with.

Dana ScullyThe X-Files (FOX) – Yes, it was a romance, one I pulled for from Episode 1, and we saw it play out over nine seasons (ignores the reboot). During those nine seasons, Scully is the female lead in a paranormal suspense series with standalone episodes and a complicated mythology. She’s also one half of the heart of the story, and her journey from skeptic to believer, while always running in heels, is an all-time favorite.

unnamedABOUT THE BOOK:

Former FBI agent Melissa “Mel” Cruz spent years skirting the line between life and death, knowing the next assignment might be her last. Back from overseas and eager to enjoy life outside the Bureau, she’s ready to give Danny Talley a Christmas Eve he’ll never forget.

A proven asset in high-stakes missions, Danny’s known for having the skill and brains to get the job done. When the Talley flagship is hijacked during the company holiday party, he’ll do anything to save his family, his love and everything they’ve all worked so hard to build. But their enemies have a secondary protocol—leave no survivors—and that plan is already in play.

Navigating through a tangled web of lies and betrayal, Mel and Danny race against the clock to retake the ship before their future goes up in flames. As the seconds tick down, they’re forced to face their greatest fear—losing each other.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Author Layla Reyne was raised in North Carolina and now calls San Francisco home. She enjoys weaving her bi-coastal experiences into her stories, along with adrenaline-fueled suspense and heart pounding romance. When she’s not writing stories to excite her readers, she downloads too many books, watches too much television, and cooks too much food with her scientist husband, much to the delight of their smushed-face, leftover-loving dogs.
