1. How do you make your playlists for your books?

Typically my books don’t have substantial playlists. Maybe just a song or two that inspired the story or the emotions. However, I’m a big fan of series and I’ve noticed that during the course of writing a longer series (bear in mind this can take a couple of years), I acquire a significant playlist. I had a long one for the Wild Irish and the one I’m sharing with you today that accompanied my Second Chances series.

Aural Pleasures: BEAUTY AND THE BOSS by Diane Alberts

Beauty and the Boss Diane Alberts

Hello! I’m Diane Alberts (though I also write as Jen McLaughlin), and I have a new book release out today called Beauty and the Boss: Modern Fairytales #1 (Entangled Indulgence). As the title implies, it’s a retelling of Beauty and the Boss, with a modern flair. It centers around Benjamin Gale, the third, who is a cold, unemotional CEO—on the outside. The heroine is Maggie, a kindhearted, beautiful researcher at his company—one who has always tempted him to stop being a beast, and start being a man.

When I’m writing, I ALWAYS have Pandora or iTunes playing in the background. I pull emotion from songs, and there’s nothing more gratifying than having the perfect song come on during the perfect scene. So I thought it would be fun to create a playlist of songs that inspired me during this book.

Aural Pleasures: UNSUNG by Shannon Richard

Unsung Shannon Richard

Shannon Richard’s Unsung pairs a jilted bride with a tattooed country musician, and their one-night stand leaves some permanent consequenes. Awkard! Shannon is here to talk about music, Unsung, and real-life musical inspirations for her heroes.

Music is a MASSIVE inspiration for my writing. A lot of times I will hear a song that inspires a scene…or sometimes even an entire book.

With Unsung there was a new kind of inspiration when it came to the musical world. The hero is Liam James, and he was conceptualized with two specific musicians in my mind: Kip Moore and Eric Church. Both men are country musicians (like Liam), they both rock scruffy gloriousness on their faces (also like Liam), and there is just something about their Southern demeanor and general badassness that I’m rather found of (again, like Liam).

While I’m writing, I have Pandora on and I shuffle through songs. I keep a lists of songs that fit a scene or even the briefest moment in the story. The ones that really resonate with me and the story, I add to a YouTube playlist.

Bittersweet Creek Sally Kilpatrick

Today we have Sally Kilpatrick sharing her thoughts on how music has shaped her books as well as her playlist for new release, Bittersweet Creek! Pick up a copy today!

I get really excited when it’s time to talk playlists. I don’t think I’ve written a novel yet that didn’t have a soundtrack, and the musical selections of my characters are often a little. . . odd. My first novel, The Happy Hour Choir, began as a “what if” from an old hymn: what if your name was Beulah Land but you didn’t behave yourself like a perfect Christian? Hijinks ensued.

Music is one of life’s greatest inspirations. A good song provokes not only thought, but emotion. Lyrics have the ability to touch us on a deep level, to spark ideas within us and heighten our senses. It’s no surprise that many authors find their muse in music, and I’m no exception.

1. How do you make your playlists for your books?

I love music and as I’m writing the story, certain songs come to me.  I immediately start a list for the book soundtrack.  Sometimes I can hear a song and think this would be excellent for my soundtrack.   Once I’m done writing the book, I try to put the songs in order to tell the story in song.
