Aural Pleasures: Music to Storm the Castle from Avery Flynn

His Undercover Princess Avery Flynn

There was absolutely no way in the world that I was going to write a book featuring a princess  (His Undercover Princess, out now) that didn’t involve storming the castle. Nope. Wasn’t gonna happen.

So in prepping to write the climactic scene, I had to get in the right mood. How better to do that then to watch The Princess Bride?

Princess Bride

It was wonderful! But it didn’t quite get there. I needed more. I needed music. Here are the five best songs I found if you’re in the mood to storm a castle.

A Real Hero by College & Electric Youth – This one took me back to the ‘80s with the electronic intro. It’s from the Drive soundtrack and it is perfect to get psyched up to breach the defenses.

Queen’s Speech 4 by Lady Leshurr – Okay, any song that ranges to work in dental hygiene and make me want to battle my way across a moat loaded with piranhas is a winner. I dare you to listen and at least not do a little chair dancing.

Cherry Bomb by The Runaways – I may or may not have listened to this song enough times that my ten-year-old son knows all the words. Don’t worry, I’m sure he’ll still grow up to be totally normal—well, as normal as he had a hope of being with me as a mom. 🙂

WTF (Where They From) by Missy Elliott featuring Pharrell Williams – You cannot listen to this without feeling the joy. If you’re storming the castle, you know you need an anthem to tell the world just how badass you are. This is it.

Something Came to Me by Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment – When it comes to storming the castle, you need an instrumental for the big battle. If it was a movie, this is when the action would go slow motion. It’s kickass electric jazz gorgeousness.

What would you pick for your soundtrack to go storming the castle?

While you decided, check out His Undercover Princess the first in my Tempt Me series:

Stylist Elle Olsen lives in fear of someone discovering her secret identity as Princess Eloise. But the men who killed her entire family in a bloody coup have done just that and now they’re coming for her. All Elle wants is to disappear into anonymity again, but the panty-melting billionaire who kidnaps her isn’t about to let that happen.

On the society pages, smoking hot financier Dominick Rasmussen is one of the world’s most eligible bachelors, but there’s more to him than meets the eye. As a secret resistance fighter, his one goal is to get Princess Eloise on the throne and restore the monarchy. The biggest problem? His stubborn and sexy undercover princess has no interest in ever wearing a tiara again.

Their goals couldn’t be more opposed, but neither Dom nor Elle can deny the attraction bringing them closer together. As the stakes rise and danger increases, they are forced to choose between love and country…
