Aural Pleasures: Jamie Wesley’s TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD

Tel Me Something Good Jamie Wesley

Thanks for having me on the blog today! I’m Jamie Wesley, and I write contemporary romance.

I listen to music all the time when I’m writing, during my commute to work, and when I’m at work. I always have my ear half-cocked for songs that fit whatever book I’m working on. Whenever I hear a song that reminds me of a scene or a character, it immediately goes on the playlist for that book. Listening to the playlist as I write helps me to get into the right headspace for the characters and the book.

But music played an even bigger role than just reminding me of a character or a scene in my book, Tell Me Something Good. In case you were wondering, yep, that’s a direct reference to the Rufus & Chaka Khan song by the same title.

Here’s the deal. This novel wouldn’t have existed without the song. Why’s that? Because I had the title of the book before the book existed.

I was driving home from work, flipping through radio stations, when “Tell Me Something Good” came on. As I was singing along to it, it occurred to me that “Tell Me Something Good” would be a great title for a book.

I had no characters, no plot. Just a title. But soon it all started coming to me in waves.

The part of the song title that stood out to me was “Tell Me.” “Tell Me” led me to “talk” and then “talk radio.” The story came together quickly from there. What if two radio show talk hosts who couldn’t stand each other were forced to do a show together?

When I did start writing the book, I envisioned a scene that takes place in a club. The heroine, Noelle, would be hesitant to dance, but the hero, Tate, would goad her into letting her inhibitions down and having some fun. I didn’t know exactly what Tate would say. Until I heard Justin Timberlake’s “Don’t Hold the Wall” and then nothing else would do! I added that song to the playlist so fast my head spun.

So yes, each song reminds me of a scene or a character. “More Than Anything” is so Tate it hurts my heart. And yep, Sir Elton John’s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” from The Lion King made the cut. LOL.

Does a song ever remind you of a book or a special person or moment in your life?

I’m thrilled to let you know that Tell Me Something Good and its sequel, Slamdunked By Love, are both on sale for $0.99! In fact, ALL the books in Entangled: Lovestruck’s line are $0.99 for a limited time. Click here for more info.

Jamie Wesley has been reading romance novels since she was about 12 when her mother left a romance novel, which a friend had given her, on the nightstand. Jamie read it instead, and the rest is history. When she’s not writing contemporary romance focusing on sports or celebrities, she’s reading, watching TV, rooting for her favorite sports teams, and/or planning her next trip to Walt Disney World.
