Exclusive Excerpt: SNAPDRAGON by Kilby Blades

Snapdragon by Kilby Blades

Cold? Colder than it’s been in, oh, all winter? Warm up with this fantastic excerpt from Snapdragon by Kilby Blades!

Michael ushered her to his car—a dark gray Maserati that suited him somehow—and tucked her safely inside. She hadn’t noticed until after he closed her door that in place of formal shoes, he wore black and white Converse All-Stars. This detail made her smile.

She watched him discreetly for several minutes as they sped down city streets. From the reverence with which he handled his car, and the obvious enjoyment with which he drove it, she got the sense that he was not just another handsome boy with an expensive plaything—he had a gentle way of handling anything he touched, and seemed like the kind of person who treasured his possessions.

Yes, Darby realized. There was something different about Michael. Already, she had a tender curiosity about him. She thought back to their easy conversation on the beach—she liked smart people who knew how to have a good discussion. Even their small talk about wedding gropers and fake engagement rings had been refreshingly real. She recalled the chemistry in his hotel room, also surprisingly reactive. She was already looking forward to the end of the night.

“What?” When he asked, she knew she had been caught watching him.

“The way you’re touching your car…I think I’m getting a bit jealous.”

The corner of his lip quirked up. “I thought we said no jealousy.”

“We agreed that our jobs came first, but we never actually agreed on rules,” she pointed out.

“Should we?” He shifted gears and glanced over at her as they turned south onto Lake Shore Drive.

“Maybe there’s only one…” she mused. “No hard feelings about competing priorities.”

“Is that enough for you?”

She thought back to how inflamed she’d been at his comment about women being biologically incapable of not wanting commitment.

“Still think you’re going to break my heart?” Darby teased.

“Maybe I’m worried you’ll break mine.” His mouth widened into an even fuller smile. He smiled a lot. Working in medicine meant Darby was often surrounded by illness and despair. She appreciated that Michael seemed happy, albeit a bit intense.

“How about this? We promise each other that when it ends, it ends in a single word—whether that be tonight or a year from now. No awkward confrontation. No messy breakup talk. That’s the shitty part anyway, right? We agree to keep it fun and simple. And, when it stops being fun, or stops being simple, it’s over.”

“Sounds sensible.” There was hesitation in his voice.

Dark. The smell of smoke. The light of a lamp falling on his face, hurting his eyes. A flinch, and the pain biting like an axe buried, rocking into bone. A wail breaking from his chest.

Exclusive Excerpt: BEST WOMEN’S EROTICA: VOLUME 2

Best Women's Erotica edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel

We’re so excited to feature another book edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel! Best Women’s Erotica: Volume 2 lives up to exactly what we loved about Volume 1. Strong characters to go with your steamy scenes? We’re 100% on board. Which is why we’ve got a (not so safe for work) sneak peek below:

From “Wordless Surrender” by Janelle Reston

Allie couldn’t abide kneeling. She didn’t need a sub who sat quietly at her feet, hoping to be petted and waiting for her command.

She had a service dog for that.

Moreover, it was burdensome to converse with someone whose mouth was next to her knees. Lip-reading from that position gave her a crick in the neck, and signing at such close proximity made it difficult to look at a person’s face and also see what their hands were doing.

“Are you done imagining what I would look like naked, or do you want me to stand here longer?” His rough voice zinged through her, setting her on edge. Not in a bad way. Awareness settled low. She ignored the instant arousal and yanked her gaze to his face. Green eyes framed by dark lashes snared her attention.

She inhaled sharply. Never before had she seen a shifter with green eyes. The rare gene offered power, just as the combination of her black hair and blue eyes gifted her with strength.

She let her gaze map his face as she had his body. Dark blond hair set off the deep emerald color of his eyes and framed a harsh face, but his shaggy locks softened his features. She doubted he’d styled it on purpose for the effect. The uneven ends gave the impression he’d hacked it off with scissors and didn’t give a shit if it looked nice or not.

The shadow of his beard added to the image of indifference. The uneven growth covered his cheeks, chin, and neck. Her fingertips itched to touch his jaw and see if the stubble had reached the point of softness or if it would tickle her skin and make her squirm. She curled her fingers and fought to contain her runaway thoughts. They weren’t appropriate, especially after being in Ethan’s arms. She swore she could still smell him on her skin.

Q&A: Tessa Bailey of WORKED UP

Worked Up by Tessa Bailey

Tessa Bailey, author of some of our favorite Contemporary Romance novels, is here with some amazing answers to our little Q&A! (Seriously, it’s like we’re in the room nerding out over movies with her). Check out our interview below and don’t miss her latest book, Worked Up, out now!

FAVORITE MOVIES:

What are your five favorite movies with romance or romantic elements?

Safety Not Guaranteed

The Princess Bride

Say Anything

Jerry Maguire

Silver Lining’s Playbook

Describe your favorite scene from each one (you can include a Youtube clip if you want as well).

The ending of Safety Not Guaranteed is the most magical, original thing ever and I won’t ruin in. Suffice it to say, I cried and cheered in my living room. The scene in Jerry Maguire where Tom Cruise says, “You complete me,” has been parodied so many times, it has lost its magic. But if you go back with a fresh perspective and watch that scene again, I guarantee you will sob. It’s one of the best grovels on film—ever. EVER. Oh God, the scene between Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in Silver Lining’s Playbook after the dance contest—honest and beautiful. I can’t even type about it without tearing up.

Did you have any of these scenes in mind when writing scenes from your latest release?

No, I wouldn’t say I ever have a movie’s ending in mind, but the theme of hero (or heroine) winning back the love of their life with a well-worded speech is definitely there!

Q&A + GIVEAWAY: Elizabeth Moss of ROSE BRIDE

Rose Bride Elizabeth Moss

Dual joy/pain of these Q&As? Our TBR pile is currently so full of books we’d have to be millionaires (though, I’d settle for several thousand-aires) to afford them all. And just when I think I’ve honed the discipline to resist, Elizabeth Moss, brilliant author of Rose Bride, comes along and—long story short, I have so much to read now, including Rose Bride, which is 1. amazing and 2. out now!

What are your five favorite movies with romance/romantic elements?

You’ve Got Mail

Pride & Prejudice

French Kiss

Casablanca

Kate & Leopold

Describe your favorite scene from each one (you can included a YouTube clip if you would like).

You’ve Got Mail – my fav scene is where Joe Fox visits Kathleen Kelly when she has a cold. He tucks her into bed and hands her tissues while she tells him about Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice. It ought to be unromantic – but of course, it’s absolutely the opposite and shows that these two are meant to be a couple.

Q&A: Rachel Kramer Bussel from BEGGING FOR IT

Begging For It Rachel Kramer Bussel

You caught us. We’re big nerds about the writing/publishing process, or How It Really Gets Made: Book Edition, so when we heard Begging For It was going to be an Erotica anthology written for all kinds of women, by women, we had to get just a touch serious. It’s a collection that’s immediately dear to our hearts and we’re so lucky to get a brief peek into the mind of its editor, Rachel Kramer Bussel. So we probed a little about the editing process along with our usual never-ending grill about Romance favorites and snack choices (because we’re still us). Love the glimpse from our Q&A? Lucky you, Begging For It is out right now!

What’s the most exciting part of putting together an Erotic Romance collection (besides the obvious)?

I always look for the sweet spot in terms of variety so my readers remain interested. I want them to find the book something greater than the sum of its parts, where the stories do somewhat speak to each other in some way without repeating scenarios.

What’s the most difficult part?

It’s always tough to have to turn down stories, but I was really impressed with how the authors I did include tackled the concept of “fantasy.” That was the main theme but they took it and ran with it, so I think the final book has sexual fantasies readers have likely considered before, or possibly shared, and plenty readers haven’t.

Guest Post: “Sex Talk—Co-Writing Hot Scenes in Cyberlove” by Megan Erickson and Santino Hassell

Fast Connection Megan Erickson Santino Hassell

Santino Hassell and Megan Erickson are back! And not only have they brought us a hilarious behind-the-scenes look at the writing process, it’s also deliciously not safe for work. (Consider this a warning and a teaser!) That’s not enough? Well, hold the phone, because we’ve also got an excerpt of Fast Connection, out now!

A lot of people ask us how we co-write sex scenes. Is it fun? Awkward? Uncomfortable?

Well, let’s just say it’s a little bit of each but usually it’s hilarious (mostly because we are ridiculous). Over the past several months we amassed a list of amusing (to us) gems from our sex-related conversations, and we’re sharing it with you guys. Anyone looking over our shoulders were a little….taken aback but we know we can trust romance readers to get it. 😉

1.“So I got this really cool wall-mounting idea…”

S: This scene took place during one of the famous dirty Skype scenes in Strong Signal. That book was fun. Also, Megan said that to me at random one day. I’m pretty sure I just rolled with it and was all “tell me more!” By then, it was normal for us to pitch ideas out of the blue.

What are your five favorite movies with romance or romantic elements?

Describe your favorite scene from each one (you can include a Youtube clip if you want as well).

Since I write for and edit lesbian erotica anthologies, my preference is for GLBTQ-themed movies, but, since there aren’t all that many of those to choose from, some of my choices are more of a mainstream nature.

  1. Bound: A thriller with a romantic core. Violet (Jennifer Tilly), longs to escape her relationship with her mafioso boyfriend Caesar (Joe Pantoliano), and enters into a clandestine affair with alluring ex-con Corky (Gina Gershon.) There are plenty of memorable (and often violent) themes, but my favorite part is the extended sex scene between the two women, which I’ve discovered was directed and “choreographed” by Susie Bright, the well-known feminist writer and sex educator. I’ll just say that she made sure they got it right.
  1. Cloudburst: Stella (Olympia Dukakis) and Dotty (Brenda Fricker) are a longtime couple separated when the daughter of Brenda’s character (who is blind) forces her mother into a nursing home—until Stella springs her from the place and they head for Canada where they can be legally married. Every scene deserves to be a favorite, especially those where Stella displays a vocabulary worthy of any sailor (which is pretty much every scene), but my favorite is possibly when Stella tries to describe a seashore sunset to her blind lover.
  1. Always: Everybody is straight in this movie, but that doesn’t keep it from being gripping. Pete Sandich is a daredevil aerial forest-fire fighter. Pete finds True Love with Dorinda (Holly Hunter) but won’t give up the job. When he takes one risk too many, Dorinda faces deep grief and cannot easily put her life back together. In a crucial scene Dorinda takes a plane up by herself to rescue trapped firefighters, but almost doesn’t make it back, until Pete’s spirit, left temporarily on earth for this very purpose, guides and strengthens her, as well as encouraging her to take advantage of a new potential love that has entered her life.
